Which bottom bracket for Trek Slash 2013? (Crankset/bb help needed)

The bottom bracket on my Trek Slash has begun to 'creak' and/or make a ticking sound when pedaling hard. It started this about 6 months ago, and as the crank rotation was smooth, I carried on using it. As I wasn't sure what it was, I waited until I swapped out my drive train for a 1x10 conversion before delving deeper (I was hoping the sound would go away!)

Sadly the noise has continued, and this morning I noticed a little slight 'crunchy' feeling at some points of the pedal stroke. I had a poke around but I still don't see any play through the crank arms, and it is still pretty smooth when I am not pressing hard on the pedals. Kind of odd.

I am suspecting that my very lax schedule of cleaning the bike after muddy trips and maybe the commuting mileage through sandy trails may have caught up with it. (I did ~3000km on the bike last year, inc singletrack, commuting etc).

Which brings me to the question in the title of the thread - what spec bottom bracket I need for the bike? I have searched everywhere, but can't seem to find an answer!

Also, any recommendations on which brand to use as a replacement - I have the stock SRAM S1200 crank on there at the moment, but I am willing to change if I'll see any benefits. (I use an XT crankset and BB on my hardtail and have been super happy - not sure it'll fit the Slash though).

    Any help appreciated!

Or as a follow up - have people had any success in just ditching the SRAM crankset and changing to something like an XT crankset and XT hollowtech BB? I think thinking that this would work out to be about the same price as a buying just a Hope ceramic BB.

Last week, I replaced the Shimano external threaded BB with the RWC (real world cycling) BB on my 2012 remedy 9. I have not test it on the trail yet. it suppose to be much more better.

Also, I have a press fit BB92 from BBinfinite on my 2015 Giant Anthem 27.5 that I just build. this BB is smooth.

Both are for the shimano HT2 XT crank.

There are lots of BBs out here. You just need to do some research.

Thanks for the reply, I'd not looked at RWC yet - I have looked around at GXP stuff from CK, Hope (with adaptor) and Endurobearings, who all having promising options, but I just can't find the specific spec/shell size etc listed *anywhere* for the 2013 Slash

Emailed Trek earlier, so hopefully they will reply soon.

Thanks again for the recommendation, in a way it reinforces my idea to maybe go to a Shimano crankset.

Which bottom bracket for Trek Slash 2013? (Crankset/bb help needed)-dscn7136_zps5cc05f17.jpg

Attach is what I found on the 2013 Trek slash 7. If the BB looks like the red color part near the non-drive side of the crank than you have a 73mm bottom bracket width which is the external (outboard) threaded bottom bracket. I think the SRAM use the BB with 24/22mm spindle. Look in the RWC website, it's very helpful or you can go with shimano HT2 crank and change to the 24mm BB.

    Hope this help

Yep, looks like that - thank you very much indeed!

I'll head to the RWC site now.

    Really appreciate the help!

Well, just sprung for this, purely as I can have it delivered in about 2 days:

Hope MTB Stainless Steel Bottom Bracket | Chain Reaction Cycles

I had to buy some Hope adaptor cups for the GXP fitting, but fingers crossed it'll do the job!

I was going to buy the Hope BB but I want to give the angular bearing a try so I went with the RWC BB. I could have gone with wheel mfg BB with the same enduro angular bearing.

RWC seem to have so much choice, I was looking for my 2013 Fuel, will any of those fit?

Yes they do have lots of choice.

I'll take what I said back. I just check my brothers Fuel Ex 8 and measure the bottom bracket to be 90mm. I guess you have to look in the "TREK BB90/BB95 BOTTOM BRACKET BEARINGS" and see what you can find to change.

Fitted the Hope item yesterday - good instructions, easy to fit (even the GXP converter spacers) and so far the creaking has stopped! \o/

    A few quick observations for people who may have the same issue;

    - The BB had never been changed, but there was *very* little grease at all left on the stock item (original install). I ride in the rain and wet frequently, so assume that a fair amount could be 'washed out' over time, but it was pretty much dry on the threads. I suspect that cleaning and re-greasing (Hope instructions recommended, to quote: 'copious amount of grease') would have stopped the noise as there was no play in the bearings on the BB I removed. I pushed on with the Hope BB installation as I figured it was a nice upgrade.

    - With the BB creaking gone, I now see that some of the noise was from the headset bearings too! So I'll need to swap/re-grease these at some point in the future. If they are as dry as the BB bearings, I think the noise there could be fixed by a quick refresh, no new items needed.
