The flows seem a lot more stiff. Only one ride so far though.

Bontrager: Satellite Elite Sideswipe Cage (Model #08242)

Works well being side entry due to the rear shock position.

seems like i can only fit in a 20 oz POLAR WATER BOTTLE. over 20 oz either wont fit or it covers the REAR-SCHOCK adjustment levers..

Bottle size is probably dependant on frame size. I removed my cage this morning as ill be using a camelbak this weekend. I'll let you know about whether a podium chill bottle works with my cage on a 21" frame on monday

exactly! mine being a 19" only has a bit of space.. got suckered into doing a 6hr relay in two weeks and i dont know how to manage just having a 20oz water bottle to use. might still end up using a hydration pack, though the weight will add up to my already slow pace but then again, its all in the spirit of having fun anyway and not for a podium finish.

Agree. I have a large frame. In a standard cage the bottle barely clears the ctd control.

This RF Elite followed me home today...

I haven't ridden it anymore than in the parking lot, down a small embankment, and onto/off of curbs but as you can see from the little o-ring I'm a little rough on this fork. The bike is a 23" model and I'm 6'5" / 210lbs.

The shop mechanic added +15psi over the trek recommended air pressure and that helped a lot as my first quick spin I managed to bottom the fork out just playing around in the parking lot...I'm used to my 170mm travel Bomber 66 fork on my Santa Cruz

Has anyone swapped the fork out for something beefier, and if so - what? On a related note, is there a remote lever kit available for purchase for the CTD knob of the front/rear? And finally - what's the most recommended dropper seatpost?

I think I'm calling in sick for tomorrow morning to play in the dirt before lunch

At 210 this fork should be more than enough. Run it in "trail mode" though. The fork is designed for the first bit of the travel to soak up all the little stuff and the last inch or so is for big hits. This gives it a bottomless feel. I've got over a thousand miles on my elite and have never bottomed it out even with jumping all sorts of drops, stair sets, and creeks. I'm 201 fully geared.

    Ah good to know, thanks!

I think the settings for the rear is also a little too stiff for my taste so ill be packing a shock pump with me for the first few rides to try to dial it in.

That's how the shocks were both initially set at the trek store when I bought the bike.

I need to spend some serious time going up/down trails to get this bike dialed in it seems, enough air in it to not bottom out the fork dropping off a 2' drop caused all of the small bump damping to disapear and my arms went numb on a pretty mild downhill single track I rode this morning, then I let out some air before the next rougher section and the rebound must now be thrown off as the fork was just packing in and getting stuck at 1/4" from fully bottomed out. I think I have the rear setup pretty decent, I used about 7/8 of the full travel with ~160psi in it.

oh and pics from the first ride, 6 personal records on the hills I climbed today...so apparently it does climb better than my 38lb Bullit
Probably would have gotten another PR if I didn't stop to take a picture

Have any other 2013 rumblefish elite owners had the clicking duster wheel issue?

    Issue: Bontrager Rhythm wheel system

My rear wheel started clicking after my first ride 1 day after I bought the bike. I brought it in after my next ride with the bike (Monday first ride, Friday 2nd ride) and the shop 'fixed' my wheel and it doesn't click anymore.

After another ride yesterday (Sunday) exactly 1 week after purchase, the front wheel seems to be developing a similar issue, though the sound from the front I'm hearing occurs with the brake applied and the wheel turned while I am standing...sort of like a track stand balance.

Some people in that thread say their LBS fixed the issue by drilling the wheels and center punching the pins at the weld joints, others more recently are saying that Trek warranty replaced their wheels with Rhythm Elite wheels in place of the Dusters.

Any experience from 2013 rumblefish owners?

I'm up to 74 miles on the bike now, thinking that if I'm seemingly breaking the wheels at this point I might need to return the bike.

Take it in. Happens all the time. It's a crap shoot what Trek will give as warranty. It's just the sleeve rattling around. First step is to try a punch to immobilize the sleeve. Second is file a warranty claim.

I have had two rims do it. Both were Rhythm Comps. Both were solved by using a punch.

Curious to know if any rumblefish riders have changed their wheelsets ?

And were the changes in riding noticeable for the better ?

Have been contemplating an upgrade, but then wonder if its a waste of money .

    Cheers

I have the elite, and I thought it was coming from the crank/bb area, but a while ago I had it on the stand wiping off the fork tubes and now I think it may be coming from the front end of the bike.

there's no play in the headset that I can feel or anything like that, but if I grab the bars and the front wheel and push them in opposite directions I can hear a creak noise. I haven't tried to tighten anything yet. is this typical of a stem being loose?
Did you ever figure out the source of the creaking noises? I'm also getting a lot of creaking/cracking/poping kind of noises that sound like it is coming from the cranks/BB. 2 trips back to the LBS where I bought it and the noise is still there.

I would suggest another bike shop / mechanic look at it.

creaks can come from anywhere, I had a fun one to track down that ended up being a bit of grit stuck in the headset at the top of the fork on my Bullit after a good bail, practically took apart and cleaned/lubed/rebuilt every other part of the bike until I figured it out.

    Re: 2013 rumblefish

I believe my creaking to be coming from the seatpost and seat. I have taken it all apart and put a thin film of grease on it and it shut up for a few rides then started again. Need to try again. I have a reverb post, but I think it is down in the frame where the noise is coming from.

I also suspected the maxle at one time.

Im not going to take it in because I dont want to be without the bike for long and have them do 5 minutes worth of work and tell me everything is fine.

what kind of grease did you use.. i have the same minor issue... bigger issue was the REVERB POST not holding pressure. had to send it back to LBS 10 days ago and have not heard from them yet...

The reverb itself has been great. I just used the tub of belray motorcycle grease that ive had for 15 years. Im guessing I missed a little bit of dirt. Im still not sure if its the clamp/seat rail, or where the post goes into the frame

I rode the Fuel 29er out of curiosity today at a trek demo day ,

It was nice , if I didnt have the Rumblefish I would be very interested, has a slightly different feel , bit more racy,

but for me , the improvements were not enough to rush out , sell the RF and get the Fuel .

Got the first mods on my new RF -

Gravity dropper knock-off dropper seatpost (tmars)
    XT shadow plus RD
    XT shifters
    SLX m660-10 crankset
    Ergon knock-off lock-on grips

Looks like I need to take the cable off the dropper post in order to route it to the trek cable clamps above the shock, the dropper came in the mail this morning so I quickly slapped it on before riding in to work

question for the RUMBLEFISH PRO owners.. did you get the BLEED KIT for your REVERB SEATPOST when you got your bike?

my REVERB post was replaced under warranty, and saw the replacement in a box and came in with a bleed kit... i asked the LBS if i could have the BLEED KIT just in case i need to bleed the post in the future which seems like a likely occurrence and they have said they can't give me the BLEED KIT because it did not come with the bike when i purchased it..

really does not make sense to me, but before i send an email out, just wanted to make sure if its a CASE-TO-CASE basis or the BLEED KIT should have been sent out with the bike..

    thanks.

Yes! I built some wheels with Stan's Crest hoops, American Classic hubs and DT SuperComp spokes.

The wheels, combined with new Schwalbe Nobby Nic tires changed the bikes personality enormously. It still rips downhills but now accelorations and climbing are both very noticeably easier.

The stock wheels (on my 2012 elite) were solid, but they're the BEST part to upgrade in my opinion.

Might be picking up base model Rumblefish this weekend. My brother has the 19" Elite. We're about the same height (5'11"ish) but I have slightly longer legs (he has longer torso). What size do you guys ride and how tall are you?

My other option is 2013 Fuel EX 7 (26er).

I'm 6'1" with a long upper torso so a 21 is perfect for me.

I just bought my son 5'11" a base model 2013 (they're on clearance sale right now!) and I got him a 21 too, just because it's design provides loads of standover and he's still growing like a weed.

    That said, I think you'll be fine on a 19 or a 21

I put some Mavic Crossmax SLR wheels on my Elite. Huge improvement in handling. Much crisper and predictable in turns. Saves just over 1 pound or nearly 2 pound if tubeless.

I'm 6' with longer legs and riding the 19.

I bought the 19 but after a 3 hour ride I am pretty certain that I need a shorter stem. Everything else feel good. However, the stem doesn't have the length and rise stamped on it. Does anyone here know the stock stem length/rise on the base model Rumblefish 19"?

Here in Australia , the 17 came with 90mm the 19 with 100mm , Im 5 11 brought the 19 but swapped over for the shorter stem .

Am thinking of going shorter again , 80mm

qtech and grundy got it right: the 19" stock stem is 80mm, 7 deg. Confirmed by cust. serv. at Trek.

I measured the stem on my 23" before swapping, it was 90mm center to center, swapped for a raceface 60mm and pretty happy with it, might swap to some carbon bars with some rise that are wider next, not sure.

Ive got a Thomson 70 mm stem and a carbon 730mm low rise bar on the way , I wanted a wider bar , but am rolling the dice a bit on the new length of stem , wanting to sharpen up the steering , bit nervous it may feel a bit cramped though.

Am currently running 90mm stem and 690 bar that came with the bike.
