Boom indeed. That is a serious build cyrjm. The Lefty looks amazing with the black frame. I'll be very interested to hear what you make of the CCDB Inline on there as well.

I'm going to try get some better pics of mine up on here in the next few days.

    Twins

Wicked looking lefty mate. Really looking forward to seeing it come alive

Wow what a epic few days of Smuggler building.

Before i go any further i really have to give a HUGE Thank You to Allen @ DropnZone.
Bro your a Legend thanks for all your help in getting the frames over to us.

So the spec of the two bikes are AKA The Twins

    My Bike

    140mm Pike
    Renthal Fatbar Lite Carbon
Roval Traverse Fattie Carbon (30 mm internal)
    A mix of XX1 & X01
    Guide rsc Brakes
    ks lev integra (125mm)
    Command Post SRL lever
    Maxxis HR2 front tire (29x2.3)

2015 Nobby Nick Rear Tire (29x2.35) There is a issue with this tire size
The tire rubs. The issue is with its hight. Under load it JUST catches the seat stay brace They are brand new tires so after a while it should stop rubbing. Kinda sucks though.

    Bike 2

    140mm Pike,
    Renthal Fatbar Lite Carbon
    Shimano Xt group set
Light-Bicycle Carbon Wheels (30 mm internal)
Can't remember what tires but they are 29x2.3
    (No rubbing issues)

Apart from the tire clearance issue on bike 1 the ride overall is amazing. I still need to setup the suspension settings etc, but wow it just floats over everything. Climbing is great (for a FS), but as i said its not 100% setup yet so i am sure it will get better and better as i dial my bike suspension in.

The 2nd frame belongs to a good friend of mine. We both really liked the spec of the smuggler and decided hell why not just get them both at the same time lol.
I don't really wanna mod the frame, I will just wait till the tire wears out a bit and then when it comes to replacing it I will just buy a 2.25 version of the Nobby Nick

We were very very luck when we pre ordered the frames from drop n zone. Just just happened to get the last two frames in the latest shipment. Still had to wait a few months though.
Stick with it mate. It's really is worth it. Epic bike.

Loving my Smuggler, here it is in its natural habitat (slightly weird go pro shots but you all know what one looks like)

    Smuggler build thread-2015-04-19_00001.jpgSmuggler build thread-2015-04-19_00003.jpg

Used a lot of second hand parts from my old ASR5, weight in XL is 14.3 kg/31.5 lbs, could probably shave some weight off things like bars, cranks once I have the spare cash.
    XL frame
MRP Stage forks @140mm ( taking advantage of them being shorter than Pikes of same travel)
    Hope headset
    Race Face Chester stem
    Renthal Fatbar
    ESI grips
    XT brakes
    SLX shifter & mech
Works Components 40t expander & Superstar IO 30 tooth ring
WTB KOM i25 rims on DT 350 hubs
Spesh Butcher & Purg Control tyres
    Reverb Stealth 150mm
    Charge Spoon saddle
    Exotic cycles flat pedals

At just under 6'5" I feel like this is the first bike to ever fit me properly, really enjoying riding it. Oh and it's the best looking XL 29er bike I've ever seen, no resemblance to a farm gate at all!

when you get the frame in the box, what is included? it's looking like there is a seat post clamp that comes with it? i figured it would just be the frame and shock, nothing else.

Next to the frame and shock a seatpost QR clamp and a X12 rear axle are included.

What kinds of rear tire/rim combos are you guys running, and how much mud clearance do you have? I've got a 2.2 WTB Bronson on an OG Flow, with a liiiiiittle bit of wiggle room, but by no means a ton.

Curious to see if there are other, knobbier options.

    Smuggler build thread

I'm running 2.3 Maxxis DHR2's with no problem on wtb i25 rims.

Ardent 2.4 fits in there but was awfully close to that seatstay brace.

Maxxis Ikon 2.35" on American Classic All Mountain rim (23mm internal width) fits with maybe 3 mm of mud clearance.

Old version Nobby Nic 2.35" fits also but is unrideable because all the mud, small rocks etc. the tire picks from the ground will hit the seatstay bridge.

Good to hear that 2.3" DHR2 fits!

Spesh Purgatory 2.3 on a WTB KOM i25 fits but with little clearance, about 2-3mm. I hear lots of stones getting dragged through the gap and pinging out. It's a bit of a shame because the lateral clearance is pretty good on these frames.

Got a WTB Vigilante coming to try on the rear, suspect it isn't going to fit but will report back.

I was wondering if a separate thread for which tyres can/can't fit the Smuggler would be a good idea but perhaps there are enough already.

I'd love to hear more from Bandit 26 owners, I love mine but the shear speed of my rigid 29er has my purchasing finger twitching. Still, requiring a large in a lairy colour in the UK it might be quite some time before that finger can be exercised! :-)

Sorry been a little to busy riding the amazing bike to remember to check the forum lol. SBD sorry I don't know the weight but once I do know I will post it. I would guess around the 26lbs ish mark. But will confirm soon.

Tire clearance wise 2015 Nobby Nicks 29x2.35 on roval fatties (30mm internal) rub on the seat stay brace. And do not fit I had zero clearance (hight not width) in the end I changed the rear tire to HR2 (29x2.30) I have about 3 mm clearance now. Seems a poor design to me.

Plus side I love love this bike

26lbs is good going! I'm at 31.5 lbs, can't see me losing more than about 1lb very easily.

Yeah it is a shame about the seat stay bridge. I wonder if a couple of mm could be removed from it without weakening it...

WTB Vigilante update - this tyre does rub the seatstay bridge :/ The wheel still spins relatively freely, but I'm not sure which will wear down quicker, the frame or the tyre!

big blue is finally in the house. the boys at the LBS waited for me so i could unbox it myself just for kicks. pretty cool. just a gorgeous frame. it will get my xfusion trace unicrown fork at 140, slx brakes, xtr rear shifter, slx rear der with one up 42t and 16t with radr cage, raceface cinch 175 crankset and 28t narrowwide ring. lev 150 will be the post. havoc carbon bar and NSB overlord stem. xl frame is 7lbs 12oz with shock. this better be a stiff as hell frame, she's heavy! with my lightweight nancy carbonium rims i'm going to guess a 31 pound complete build with pedals. LBS is really busy right now, i sure hope they can get her done by the weekend i'm frothing at the mouth to get on it! pictures to follow............

i'm not a fan of the internal routing. and the lev can quickly be moved to my other bike, so it works great like this. wouldn't mind finding some adhesive cable guides at some point, otherwise a bit of tape works just fine.

    Smuggler build thread

Reading all this is creating much desire. I have 26 in. Transitions and fell for new breed 29r via my Kona Honzo. I'd love what the Honzo does but with some rear suspension and a lightweight.

What size for someone 5'10" and shrinking (late 50s age)??? My v 1.5 Covert, Bank and Honzo are medium. A dealer suggested large but that is longer top tube than my medium Honzo. There are no stocking dealers near me. I've got longer legs than torso.

I can't imagine giving up my hard tail (ride from home) but this looks like a serious contender for big rides (long hours, rough stuff, 15-30+ miles) and the 1 build is probably lighter than my stock Honzo.

    Thank you for any suggestions.

I immediately noticed that I had increased traction climbing tech and braking on the descents so I'm very happy with the horst link design. One thing I thought would be negative on this bike is the lack of rear suspension travel. I'm a big rider at 240lbs geared up and had no problem with harsh bottoms out. Very composed.

Coming from a Covert I thought it would be an issue but at least for me its not. Yes its not a 5-6" bike however I think Transition did an excellent job with the design and bottom out control. I started with the sag at 35% and have since moved to about 40% and fully open platform on the debonair. It feels much better with this setup. Up front I'm running a Fox 34 140mm with Avalanche damper. All good there and can't really say it has any negative affect on handling as they spec the bike at 130mm.

One other thing to note is how snappy this bike feels with the newer geometry. Much easier to manual and flick around. Depending on your preference you may or may not like the longer top tube. I do as I prefer longer front, short stays and short stem.

    More to come later.

    Size small frame - 27.25lbs

This bike is amazing. I know others have gone on about how good it is but it's true! If you are considering this bike, I highly recommend it!
