Something is coming towards the end of the year, but I don't know what.

I was chatting up the Transition rep at a demo day recently and saying how I reallllllly want to buy a Smuggler Carbon and if I should be getting my credit card ready. He obviously didn't give me any details about what it was, but he said there was definitely something in the works that would be "worth waiting for" and implied it was a 2018 model.

The bike in the pics is reported to be Lars' bike, and he is sponsored by Fox.
Most everything else in the catalog of Giddy'ups is RockShox, so I might wager that the bike will be spec'd with a Lyrik and SuperDeluxe.

Can you at least tell us if it will be available in Carbon and have at least 150mm of squish? Too hard to read the blurry image. Or how about a release date?

There's another photo on PB where it's in full extension horse-cock length.

Seems like the PR is all about new geometry concepts not specifically the 29er release. Unless there's more to come later today...

Yeah bit of a let down, I hope they come out with it. There's been a guy commenting in most of the spy shot pages that it's going to be 140/160 with a 64 degree HTA, starting to think he might be right after reading this article. Was hoping for 150/160

Hey everyone. We can't say much at this point beyond what is in the stuff that will continue to come out today. Expect more info later this year.

Regarding the seatpost height, Lars is 5'8" and has a long inseam. That's a 150mm dropper. A 170mm dropper post will lower all the way to the collar in the seat tube should you want it to.

    Cheers!

Thanks for contributing Transition Bikes. If Lars is 5'8 what size frame is he riding in the new geometry? Do you see folk sizing down if they are borderline between say size L and XL as the 'new' L is that bit longer?

Hey Groundskeeper, Lars is riding a Medium. We personally believe that there are no set sizes. Riders should choose whatever size bike they feel most comfortable on. We've been taking steps to make it easy to go up or down in size for a while now.

    Geometry looks really good. For those that don't want to click the link;

    Size M
    HA 64
    SA 76.8
    Reach 450
    CS 435

I read somewhere that the large will be a 475 Reach.

So stoked to see Transition moving these geometry concepts from the fringes to more mainstream while taking the risk and time to educate consumers. Well done guys.

Wonder if XL will go over 500mm of reach?

Also still have not confirmed rear travel or frame material.

Assuming this photo has 175mm cranks on it, I can pull just a couple measurements...getting

Exposed stanchion on the 36: 178mm (likely 170 travel? would jive with the setting and full face helmet)

Rear shock: 200mm x 57mm looks about right, but guessing it's metric so maybe something close to that. Def appears shorter than the Patrol's 230mm shock.

You can see welds in the high res versions of Pinkbike photos. Doesn't answer if a plastic version, but definitely appears at least the test mules are aluminum.

Looking at BB height there is enough room for 150, or more, rear travel. E29 is 351mm at 155mm rear travel. Wreckoning is 348mm for 160mm. Slash is 352mm for 150mm rear travel.

Sure the SB5.5C is 346mm at 140mm rear and is fairly conservative; not exactly what I think of when Transition comes to mind...

Numbers look killer and appreciate the early release and transparency in the design process. I think I may have to have to hold off on ordering a new frame this year until this thing is released. Still questioning a bit how wierd 64 HA will feel on a 29er but excited to find out.

Also love the apparent Fox spec, hope they option in the DHX2 as well.

Edit: the aluminum "super smuggler" shown in the Pinkbike post has a DHX2. It looks amazing. Not sure if this is the same as the Sentinel. Or if there are two separate LT 29ers coming

The super smuggler is just a regular smuggler they used tp test the early sbg concept. Lars said in an interview that its not a dhx2, its an older dhx with a new spring. The sentinel is the result of the super smuggler. I can't wait to try one!!

Wouldn't be surprised to see an updated Smuggler also at some stage. Maybe with slightly more travel would be nice.

New Smuggler is easy to do since there is no carbon version, therefore no expensive holds to redo. Also 29 Smuggler/Sentinel would mesh nicely with the 650b Scout/Patrol, and the new Throttle/Vanquish hardtails. A bump in travel depends on how much the Sentinel has, as they will want enough separation between the two.
I got some bad ideas in my head.

Agreed! A new smuggler with sbg would be ideal. The sentinel looks cool, but it might be overkill for me.

Hope they are working on a slick resonably light carbon layup right now for the Sentinel. Would be great if a 27.something lbs top end build was possible. Looks like the current Patrols had potential in that range.

Other wishes- the orange color on that "super smuggler" in the pinkbike piece is killer!

Doubt that we'll see carbon this time round. They'll want to be sure they've got something on the hook before they entertain a carbon SBG offering.

Is that typical for Transition - to release aluminum frames well prior to carbon? Would like to wait on this frame- looks amazing - but would be good to know if Sept is Alloy only for sure and if so how long after carbon will follow

Found this bike shop offering pre-sale on the Sentinel. Not sure if they are guessing or have let the cat out of the bag accidentally but they are saying it has 150mm travel!!

I've really got no idea. It just looks to me it's the way they've gone about doing things in the past. But who knows, I hope it's alloy first.

I guess only difference is the carbon hardtails they put out this past year. I mean, they used to have some alloy/steel jawns, but I was surprised to see a jump to carbon from them since it was a newer thing through their lineup. I guess hardtails are an easier sell/design.

Given the hype surrounding the launch and SBG tech in general, it would seem strange to not build carbon versions, particularly given the success of the Patrol carbon and Smuggler carbon. Not to say their alloy frames don't also look great, but carbon (right or wrong) has become the elite bike building material for top end bikes. The Patrol Carbon won Pinkbike Mountain Bike of the Year 2016 (!) Love their stuff regardless but certainly hoping for light carbon options.

Seems like 44mm offset will be the norm for LT 29ers. 1218 wb ia pretty long, interested to see how it'll feel on tight switchbacks and low speed trails but the numbers ooze stability. Is the max seatpost insert on the medium at least 270mm?
Will have to add this bike to the wish list and look for a demo in socal when its available.
