Carbon will happen for the Patrol for sure, not sure about the Scout, but I wouldn't be holding your breath; I asked them about the carbon Patrol and it'll be available when it's ready was the summarized response.
yeah...$100 says he is. What kind of preproduction decal work is on that thing? looks like a bunch of shooting stars or something. It'd be amazing if they moved the cable routing from under the bb to above.
Lars Sternberg and Luke Strobel rip the ridges and berms of Xanadu in Eastern Washington. Lars is on his Transition Patrol and Luke is on his Evil Bikes The Following 29er. There may be some news about what you might see in this video dropping in the next few weeks, too.
Theres no mention anywhere from the Transition camp, only speculation on the forums. Im sure there will be a major press release when they want everyone to know this time.
Near me we had a big demo day event with tons of vendors. I talked with a Transition rep and he said the Carbon patrol will be out this summer, but the carbon scout wont be until next year. No firm time frame on the carbon scout just an "its in the works".
That's a shame, personally I'd have thought it would make more sense to do the Scout first. IMO a shorter travel trail bike would benefit more from a lighter carbon frame compared to the more gravity-oriented Patrol.
It's not the weight. It's the stiffness. While carbon does a lot to reduce weight, metallurgy has gotten so good that differences are as low as 0.5 lbs between carbon and alu for the same design (see the Giant bikes). Stiffness is the real prize of carbon, and on a big travel rig where you're slapping 36mm legs, 35mm diameter bars, etc. stiff frames add to the luxury.
Fair point, I know the cheaper SantaCruz carbon frames aren't much difference in weight between them and the alu ones, guess it all depends on the price-point they're trying to fill too.
Still think it's a shame, I'd be pretty tempted by a carbon Scout!
I'm also down for a carbon Scout. This is the bike I'm waiting for. This is truly the one bike to rule them all in the PNW. The Patrol would be great but it is a lot of bike for the trails I ride in Seattle.
