    Rock face cleaning ?

I'm new to trail building, so sorry if things I say are ridiculous... Just let me know. I found this really great old trail. I was very over grown so I cleaned it all with rake and other tools. Now I'm left with 2 really nice potential rock face that wasn't part of the inital trail. They both have a rather tick layer of dirt on top, probably 3-4 inches. If there's is no dirt, there is moss. How to I clean this stuff ? I guess I shouldn't go all out a remove all this organic matter. But I can surely remove a "path" through it. Any tips on how to do so?

We use the rough surface push brooms to cut trail in the desert. You can get them at home depot and they have sizes that are about as wide as you would want singletrack. That might work.

If its thick organic mat interlaced with roots etc., I've used a pulaski to cut through either side then roll it off like you would cutting sod. The stuff doesn't adhere to the rock, but the mats are tough to remove if they're full of roots.
