Innovative woodwork featured in this IMBA trail build

Forgive the self-congratulations (I'm an IMBA staffer) but I think the woodwork incorporated in the IMBA-built trail at Copper Harbor (MI) is pretty dang sweet. The curved timbers are a shipbuilding technique.

Mark, were those features concieved, designed, and constructed specifically by IMBA trail solution employees, or locals?
I would like to hear the backstory.

Oi vey. Aaron Rogers, both an IMBA employee and a local, led the project. He's a trail builder on the Trail Solutions team.

Cool. Not a critique, just searching for a history of how the shipbuilding skills were employed. It's a cool application (yes, I am a builder, and I am contemplating a few features for a local ski area system).
Looks kinda like some skatepark/1/2 pipe techniques as well.

If you look close you'll see the decking is actually 2 thinner pieces of wood sandwiched together. After they were installed they were cut flush.
