the little piece of metal at the end of a cable? ya know the one that keeps the cable from fraying... i thought they were called cable stops but a search here reveals that most think of cable stops as the frame welded part..

also, where can i buy some?

They're cable end tips. You can buy some at any bike shop but it's a good idea to get a bag of a hundred as they will be much cheaper and will last you for years. By the way - if you squeeze them on to a cable, the end of the cable will be somewhat messed up. I solder the ends of my cables and squeezing on a cable end cap doesn't affect the cable at all.

Here they are -

I've always referred to them as cable tips. Some people call them cable crimps. Just go to a shop and ask for some "things that go on the end of a cable to keep it from fraying." I'm sure they'll be able to figure out what you mean. If you just need a few they'd probably give you some. Assuming that you have some sort of relationship with them. If not, you could probably pick some up from them or online.

Somebody posted on this forum that they use "heat-shrink" tubing instead of the cable end tips. I start using them now. Just cut 0.5" length slide over cable end and heat up slightly with lighter. Looks much cleaner and does not damage the cable at all. They also come in different colors. you can get them from Radio Shack or Fry's or any other elecronic retailer.

I had to get some the other week not knowing what they are, but the mechanic who gave them to me said the proper name for them was ferrels.
A ferrule is the metal or plastic piece that fits over an end of cable housing. They are big enough to fit over the housing and have a small hole where the cable passes through. I'm sure the inaccuracy was caused by a miscommunication. A cable tip goes on the end of the cable.
