Trouble removing a deep cup headset from a butted head tube

I'm trying to remove the FSA Big Fat Pig 1.5" reducing headset from my wife's Jamis Diablo.

The problem is that the cups are pretty deep and the headtube is butted, so the regular removal tool won't catch the lip of the cup. I've also tried a flat head screw driver and couldn't get it to catch on the cup either.

Does anyone know of a method to get the cups out when you can't push them out from the inside? I don't care about the headset itself, so I have no problem using a method that damages the cups.

One option I was thinking of was drilling a hole on each end of the cup and putting a rod horizontally through the cup, then I would hopefully push against this rod to get the cup out. Since I'm not sure it will work and it sounds a little extreme I thought I'd check here before drilling the headset.
