I bought a dirt jumper with a Truvativ crank that has re-enforcing sleeves in the pedal holes.
When I removed the pedals the sleeves come out of the cranks attached to the pedals. I tried several methods of securing the sleeves into the pedal holes like Locktite, teflon plumbing tape, and Liquidweld epoxy and the sleeves still come out.
Anyone else experience this and know how to get the pedal without the sleeves?
If you can clean the outer diameter of the insert and the crank arms.
Put red locktite on the insert and install it into the arm.
Get it as tight as you can.
Then you can "stake" the insert to the crank arm.
Use a hammer and sharp punch or the corner of a chisel to force the edge of the insert into the crank arm, locking it into place
As was mentioned you need to use Red Loctite to permanently lock them in, makes sure the sleeve threads are perfectly dry and clean...use a wire brush. Then prep the sleeve and crank threads with Primer T or N before you turn the sleeves in covered in Red Loctite, use your pedal as an installation tool but don't crank it down to full torque until the loctite has kicked overnight.
Primer T is slow and Primer N is quick (60 seconds fast), make sure you have everything prepped and ready to install in less than a minute if your using Primer N.
SRAM is replacing the crankset under warrenty ( very nice of Dan).
I now have pedals locked in crankset insert to deal with. Been soaking in Liquid Wrench and cannot get enough purchase on the insert to break pedals. Tried clamping in bench vice but they just twist.
How do I remove inserts and still save pedal threads?
Haven't tried heat. Guess that is next unless someone has a better suggestion.
use a Dremel tool or die grinder with a cut off disk.
cut into the insert. not all the way through. almost into the pedal.
then use a chisel to split the insert. on or two good whacks should work.
you didn't use locktite on the pedal did you?
if you did. use a heat gun or small propane torch.
Should the cut be made the full length of the insert before using the chisel? No loctite on pedals but how would I use the propane torch? Warming the whole insert like the preparation to melt a hole in glass?
Finally got the pedals removed by clamping inserts in vice removing pedals with Park wrench, lots of effort.
Thanks everyone for your help.
