    New chain is skipping

I've recently replaced my chain on my commuter bike and on the first ride the chain was skipping every time I applied decent force on the pedals. I didn't initially think the cassette was worn but is this likely the reason for this happening? Should one always replace the chain and cassette at the same time? Thanks

Try riding using cogs on the cassette that you don't usually and see if it still skips.

I found I spent so much time using one of the cogs that I had to repace my cassette after just one chain worn to 0.75% to get it to stop skipping when I put on the new chain.

Time for a new cassette or chainring, possibly both.

Weather or not you need a new cassette with every chain completely depends on when they are replaced.

I'd suspect the cassette, especially if the old chain was very worn.

If you replace the chain before it get's very stretched out then chances are you can go through a few chain changes before needing to replace the cassette. Otherwise just let them both ride until they need to be replaced as a pair.
