    IS42/IS52 Internal headset help

I have a Planet X carbon dirty harry with bonded in aluminum internal headset cups. With the spec'd FSA CF 40 headset, the crown of my 2014 Rock Shox SID rubs ever so slightly on the edge of the headtube. No headset company makes a taller race. FSA suggested having the the headtube faced. Planet X said this was OK but the local shop doesnt have the correct cutting tools. Is this something that can be safely done on a carbon frame?

Well interesting actually. I pulled the 2013 SID off my Carbon Rockstar and installed it and ther ewere no rubbing issues. The crown on the 2014 SID is just a little bit fatter where it attaches to the steerer tube. I did take a sanding block and clean off the excess paint on the edge of the headtube and reassembled with the 2014 SID and all appears to be OK with no rubbing. However it is very tight. I guess Niner had an issue with the JET9 RDO where the crowns would hit the downtube so they made a 5mm crown race for the FSA IS52 bottom assembly, I ordered one just to have around in case I start to have any issues.

Chris King does taller crown races as well. May or may not mesh well with your FSA headset.
