    incompatible XTR shifter/derailer?

    All,

I just installed my new XTR rear derailer, M980. I realize now that I ordered a 10 speed and I have older 9-speed rapid fire XTR shifters. Are these incompatible?

After I install the derailer, adjust the low limit, shift out the maximum amount of cable, and attach the cable to the derailer, it won't shift up to the largest cog (its not hitting the limit screw).

If I take up enough tension from the shifter cable to have the derailer on the largest cog, then there isn't enough slack left to shift all the way down to the smallest cog.

Is this a result of this being a 10-speed derailer, or have I screwed something up with installation?

    Thanks for your help.

not compatible, 10 speed shimano mtb has different cable pull ratio.

if you insist on using a 10 speed RD you can put a road one, that is compatible with 9sp levers.

Thanks. Its on its way back to the store. Should've known it was cheap for a reason!
