Pull the chain forward from the front of the ring. If it exposes a full tooth, it's time for a change. Try it on a new bike too so you have some frame of reference.
If the drivetrain starts skipping it is usually time to replace the chain and cassette. What you can do is try a new chain first and see how it goes, but I normally replace chains/cassettes together. If you still get some skipping it can only mean the chainrings are worn.
I like to do the measure test for chains as well as an indicator. Measure pin to pin over 12 inches. If it gets more than that replace the chain. This way you might get by with keeping the cassette, but it will definitely prolong the chainrings which can last for quite awhile.
