What is the widest tire a cross check will take?

I'm looking for a tire that will grip in loose, dry, wet, hardpack, road, small gravel, big rocks, type conditions.

I figure it needs to be fat to keep the big gravel from pushing it around.

So, what is the fattest tire it will take without fenders?

Wow guy. Soooo... you're pretty much looking for the PERFECT tire. Don't know if it exists, but I hear Bruce Gordon's new-old Rock n Road is close. Yes, it fits on the CC.

I never do type in the right words to get what I'm searching for.... never. :/

And have any of you used the panarcer fire cross on road? How does it do? I keep reading low rolling resistance but I see big crazy knobs.

Fire Cross is a poor road tyre, slow and noisy. Trouble is, it's so good off-road that I keep them on the bike anyway and just put up with it.

I don't have a CC, I have a Salsa Casseroll but it has BG rock n road tires, they are awesome on paved or gravel EXCEPT wet stuff, then they just pack and throw crap like crazy. Took em on a gravel tour a few weeks ago and every mile or so, I would have to stop and pound my bike up and down to knock the gunk off the tires and stays, then poke all the crud it threw into my cassette out. No fun! So stay off the wet stuff, and you are golden! The guys who ran knobs on the outside with more grid like center pattern tires faired better. Like these:

Ive been running Bontrager 293's in the 2.0size for a couple years now they are the biggest that
will fit They have been great on everything. They are actually closer to a 1.8 or 1.9 and its tight and
rear wheel needs to be way back in the drop outs. These are my favorite yet by far.

I use and can recommend Schwalbe Smart Sam in 1.9" width. Does well in the conditions you describe and is not too sluggish on the road.

    293?

What is the widest tire a cross check will take?-photo0196.jpg

I think that this is the tire fixgeardan is referring to. I honestly didn't know what to call it, saying that it was a Bontrager EXP in the Cross Check Pics thread.

In any case, it's supposed to be 29x2.0 and it fits just barely in the rear triangle. I loved having it on my CC, but decided to swap them out for 700x45c tires because I noticed rubbing when mashing on the pedals. The only way to lessen the rubbing was to drop the pressure in the tire.
