Good job! Swapping frames from compete builds (Spec Stumpy Comp 29 to a Karate Monkey): help?

    Hey guys,

I'm finally going all Surly for my stable. I currently have a Cross Check, and I just finally found someone willing to swap frames + forks for my 2009 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp 29. They're giving me a 2008 Surly Karate Monkey frame + fork + $ in exchange.

Quick background: I'm not a pro when it comes to bike building, but I'd say I'm more knowledgeable than most, this is my 10th mountain bike, and I've built each of them up on my own.

That being said... will I run into any major issues with swapping components over? Incompatible components, etc?

    - So far it appears my Thomson seat post and Thomson seat post clamp will not swap, and that's fine, I'll grab new ones.

    - Also the front derailleur clamp will not work. Is there an adapter that I can purchase, or should I swap front derailleurs too?

Other than that... I can't seem to find any other issues off hand. Any thoughts?

Below is my build list for my 09 Spec SJ Comp 29....
Cane Creek S3 Threadless Headset (1-1/8", sealed bearing) *this will go with the frame
Thomson Elite X4 Stem (110x31.8mm/0 rise)
Easton EA70 Monkey Bar Low Rise Handlebar (685x31.8mm/8 bend/4 upsweep)
SRAM X-9 Front & Rear Trigger Shifters
Avid Elixir CR Front & Rear Brake Levers
Avid Matchmaker Brake Lever & Trigger Shifter Clamps
    Ergon GX1 Leichtbau Grips
Avid Elixir CR Front & Rear Hydraulic Disc Brakes w/160mm Rotors
Shimano SLX M660 Front Derailleur *KM has a smaller clamp diameter
    SRAM X-9 Rear Derailleur
    Shimano Deore Hollowtech 2 FC-M542 Crankset (175mm)
Shimano FC-M542 Hollow Bottom Bracket *should I just use the existing KM BB?
    Shimano M520 Clipless Pedals
    Shimano SLX HG61 Cassette (9-speed, 11-34t)
    SRAM PC-971 Chain w/Power Link
Thomson Elite Seatpost (30.9x410mm) *will buy a new one/include in trade
Thomson Seatpost Clamp (34.9mm) *will buy a new one/include in trade
Specialized Phenom Saddle w/Hollow Cr-Mo Rails
    DT Swiss X470 29" Rims
DT Swiss 1.8mm SS Spokes w/alloy nipples
Specialized Hi Lo Disc Front Hub (sealed cartridge bearing)
DT Swiss RWS 9mm Quick Release (front)
    Shimano M525 SL Rear Hub
Shimano SLX Quick Release Skewer (rear)
WTB Weirwolf LT 29x2.55" Front & Rear Tires

Thanks much for your help. Glad to finally have 100% Surly, I've been waiting.

Sounds really good so far.My brother did the same thing with an old Trek road bike and a Pacer earlier this year. If you can score the donor bike cheap enough it usually works. Good luck and post some pics when it's finished.

    Bad ass.

Well, I just did some research and found that shims are available for the front derailleur mount, so that is one issue down.

I suppose the last problem would be the bottom bracket issue, and if my existing crankset from the Stumpy donor will bolt up to the new (to me) bottom bracket currently installed in the Surly KM frame, since we'll leave both the headsets and bottom brackets installed.

Looks like I've got a Thomson seatpost and Thomson seatpost clamp up for trade for a smaller size to fit the KM if there are any takers out there.
    I have....
    Thomson Elite Seatpost (30.9 x 410mm)
    Thomson Seatpost Clamp (34.9mm)
    (mine are near mint)
    I want....
    Thomson Elite Seatpost (27.2 x 350+mm)
    Thomson Seatpost Clamp (30.0mm)
