    No Dirt Wizard 29x3"

Looks like the new Surly catalog only lists the 29+ Dirt WIzard in a 2.75" width? No 3" width for the front of my Krampus?

The Knard 29 x 3.0" fills the back of a Krampus to the max. Hence to add knobs they had to shrink the tire casing a tad.

If they didn't they'd be making a tire their own customers couldn't use on 29+ specific bikes and making these niche tires is expensive enough they can't afford to do a ton of different sizes.

2.75" is still huge and fits both ends of the Krampus and ECR.

BTW - this also means it will fit quite a few suspension forks with reasonable clearance unlike the Knard which either didn't fit or fit with marginal clearance.

Word. I'm just wondering if it will be super mis-matched to have the smaller 2.75" on the front, I plan on keeping the Knard on the rear.

I don't think it will be a big deal running mixed 29+ rubber.

I'm wondering if (aka hoping) the 29x2.75 might stand a chance of fitting an Ogre. Anyone know yay or nay?

A chance? Yes. Someone stuffed a 29 x 3" Knard into the rear of a KM - barely. So a 2.75" tire would have a better chance at fitting. However, if it does fit it will be pretty tight in there.

A Knard fills up the rear of my Krampus to the point of minimal clearance for any wheel wobble.

Some more test fitting - doesn't look so good...

There's about 3mm of space between the wheel and the chain stays. Because the steel frame flexes so much the Knard still scrapes on the chain stays when pedaling hard on in turns. Also mud and snow will quickly clog up the space. I only did a little 50km trip on mostly just slightly muddy ground though. The grip even on very wet mud puddles was fantastic though I have now installed the Knard on my front wheel, which of course works fine.

Here are a couple of pics, article is only in German, though: Surly Knard 3.0 im Karate Monkey Bikelog Mountainbike Blog

I keep thinking the 2.75 has a better chance of fitting than a 3.0. Is this a false hope?

In theory if the DW is actually 0.25" narrower including the side knobs that buys you an extra 3mm of clearance on each side. However the side knobs may eat into this clearance depending how Surly measured the width.

Either way you aren't left with much room and the wheel needs to be pushed to the far end of the dropouts which may cause shifting problems.

If you want a DW anyways for the front of your bike it doesn't hurt to buy one and see if it works in the rear.

Keeping in mind the Ogre's rear is spec'd for a 2.5" tire.

I'll document it when it happens.

I have quite a few bike projects on the go a ton of blow down to clear off the trails so my plate is full.

I should have it finished by the 2nd to 3rd week of March.
