    Most hardcore Surly MTB

Okay which one is it? For singletrack, trail, semi-enduro, and even light lift served downhill which one to pick? I'm thinking its the Instigator but how does the Karate Monkey, Wednesday, or ICT stack up?

Probably the KM, with the Krampus and Instigator 2.0 not far behind. Krampus is a little funkier, Instigator is a little dated and funkier still.

Just buy a used Pacer and throw some knobbies on it.
it's a challenge some of us are ultimately worthy of.

    Most unbreakable? The original Instigator.

I ride all those things on my monkey. It eats most trails with ease. Honestly big(ish) features if smooth are not an issue at all really. It's the really bumpy ladders and washboard rock sections that are the biggest challenge. Just gotta slow down a bit or get use to your teeth chattering.

Go custom! 65%HA, 120mm, big wheels
In the end choose something that is going to put smile on your face every time you ride it...

Instigator. Original instigator is bombproof but the geometry isn't as good for downhill as the new one imo

I've rode lift accessed and shuttled trails on a transition vagrant. My instigator replaced that frame after cracking and has just as good of geo or better. If you want to do massive drops without smooth landings or downhill racing etc you probably shouldn't get a hardtail

The old skinny tubed Monk's are quite adept at a bit of Downhill shuttle fun and racing.
    Don't advise the v-brakes though.

it has limits, but is it fun when your riding the edge of the what the bike can do.

MK3 Krampus. Enduro for days on that beast. In fact some people are complaining it's too Enduro. As if that was possible!

I just got one of the Instigator 2.0 frame sets on super discount from QBP. Looks pretty gnarly with the slack angles and somewhat long top. I guess I'll find out.

Vik, now that you mention the Krampus I kind of regret not going that route. Looks like a sweet bike and the geo is almost the same as my Wednesday which I love except with a little more fork travel.
