    geared KM question...

Can/do you push the rear axle all the way forward when running in geared mode? Does the tire hit the seat tube if you run a reasonable tire e.g. 2.1 or so?

Depends on your front derailleur. I think there's a Surly Spew article about it, but I. Think you'll be ok. If not the Surly Monkey nuts will help.

As Jason said, it depends on which front mech you use. I had an old style KM with the gear-cables under the BB shell. I found an old Suntour X1 mech cleared my 2" Michelins even fully forward in the drop-outs no problem.

I think the new KM's require top-pull mechs, which may mean that the monkey nuts are necessary!

If youre running a front derailleur youll likely need the surly monkey nuts. I run a 1x9 with a 2.2 tire with the wheel all the way forward in the dropouts without a problem.

Thanks for the timely responses guys...

Forgot to mention that my plan would be a 1x9, so it looks like I'm ok.

Oh you'll be fine. I'd go with a strong skewer like a Salsa or XT just to be on the safe side. It'll ride awesome and be really easy to wheelie

Hi, you can see on the thread my Karate Monkey Geared. I tell you, I used the Tuggnut to set up the wheel against chain pull action.
The Tuggnut, positiones at the end of the dropouts, would end that and you can set the rear axle on the second hole.
I used the top swing front der SLX and the clearence is good but not so much. So if you don't use the Tuggnut you should use the Monkey Nuts.
By the way take a look to the thread and to the pics.
    Cheers
