    Switched from Fixed to Free (white Ind Dos Eno)

    And put on some new Rubbers (Vee Rubber X-C-X)

    Love these tires after 1 week of riding on Dirt, Gravel, Grass and Pavement

    Great looking bike! I've been eyeballing all the new Vee Rubber. What other tires in that size range can you compare them to? I think that the 1.75 Vee 12s will be nice when they come out.

    Camping with my five year old this weekend:



    I'm trying H bars again, but I'm really not sure about these. It's hard to find a shifter configuration that doesn't screw up at least one of the hand positions. This setup blocked both the crossbar and the forward extensions:

    I love the front bag though, it's so much more convenient here than as a saddlebag. I'm currently building up an rSogn that's optimized for front loads, and I'm curious how that's going to turn out.

    Happy to say the CC did fine, even towing all of our overnight necessities (teddy bears, books, cooler, and a folding razor scooter):

    I just finished adding some Velo Orange bits and pieces, including some snazzy golden brakes I picked up at their garage sale in April. Came out pretty I think.

    Just finished building this up. Scored the frame used on eBay, build up mostly with parts I had waiting, and built up the wheelset. So far so good, and I actually like the brown, which I was skeptical about at first.

    got a query on the use of fenders, i bought a set of SKS P45's and from what i can see i'm going to get some toe strike, in fact i had toe strike just riding it around in my driveway!
    i have a 46 size shoe and this is on a 52cm cross check.

    is this a common problem?

    Great looking bike. Mine is the light grey color from a few years ago. The colors definitely let people know that you are on a Surly!

    You have relatively big feet, a small frame, and fenders, while riding slowly... so yes, toe overlap could be a problem in that situation. Should be OK once you're rolling, since you can't turn the wheel far enough to hit.

    If this really bothers you, look into a new frame. 650B + low trail is a good way to cure toe overlap. The 650B wheel is smaller, putting it further away, and the low trail fork kicks the front wheel away from you as well.

    thanks for that, you're probably right, i've decided to give the fenders a miss for a while, the bike is apart again waiting for new shifters, i'll look into it again when i get it built.
    when i compare it to my troll (size 18") my toe doesn't even look like coming close (running 26" wheels, 2" rubber and 2" fenders)

    The Troll has a longer top tube, smaller wheels, and a slacker head tube angle... all of these things push the front wheel farther away.

    Had Ilikebmx999 had his bike in here he may never have found it again!

















    Went out for a little ride today. Decided to take a look at some of those "I wonder what's down there" trails that branched out from the paved path I was on. The bike-tall growth of miscellaneous greenery had me wanting road drop bars on several occasions. Thinking about it a little more now. It's not like I venture into growth like that often, so ... *shrug* Ultimately i'd find it a more useful feature to have simply for not having my shirt catch the end of the flat bar when i'm walking by! (I swear handlebars and trees are related - gotta be from the same ninja family or something, always jumping to grab ya! )

    Ideally I had a destination in mind - North. Farther North than what i'd managed. I happened upon a photo-op and managed to turn it, rather gracelessly, into a flat-op ... as evidenced by the "I couldn't do that again if I tried" flat rear wheel stance with the "Lake" in the background. So the Karma's are going back on after I click the "Submit Reply" button!

    Still had a smile, ugly as it is, on my face at the end of it all ... whilst waiting for the cavalry to arrive. Yeah, dumbo here managed to remember the flat tire repair kit, but not his pump.

    Still a great morning ride. Can't remember how many people I said "good morning" to while out there, stopped counting over 20.
    I ..... need ..... DIRT!!!!!

    Found myself having a quick peek through this thread last night. It started innocently enough, but wound up turning into a (rum-insipred) mission ... not many CrossChecks in here with 4-bolt mtn cranks. Less than a dozen bikes so far, iirc ... ? (again, rum was involved in the count last night! )

    Not one to be denied, I got to business after a meal and a break, and was back at it again. Changes aplenty already!

    Gone are the black Deore 170mm cranks and 36/48T rings. Currently in place, and desperately needed/missed, are 175mm Deore 582s lovingly carrying a 32/44T set up. MUCH better on all counts. These long-a$$ legs'o'mine just can't spin those short cranks. It's not a placebo effect - still gonna have to get myself back onto 180s.

    The Kenda Karmas are back and making me need my bell less (funny how *whirwhirwhirwhir* works nearly as well as *ringring* ).

    Decided to run flats again. Rocked the Azonic Mags for this ride. Strange how I am finding it so easy to get back into riding flats again, when I used to be so pro-clipless. *shrug* Meh, whatever, i'll take it!

    Seat position changed. My butt and prostate are happier now ... and i'm starting to think that the next change might be drop bars. I can put power into the cranks again and it's really REALLY ****ing with my chi ... and not in a good way. I'm not used to having a big-tired bike that posesses geometry that is so sensitive to contact point alteration. My 29ers are usually "get it with 5-10mm and it's good". Not so with this Cross Check.

    Interesting. I like it!

    We built up another CC for my fiancé. Which means I got to transfer some stock parts out for some new ones.

    New pedals, Ultegra shifter, Deore RD, Mavic rear to 105 hub.

    I've been keeping the fenders and racks off mine lately. It's so much fun to ride now that it's lighter and zippier.

    Schwalbes often run smaller than the stated size. The 46mm Marathons actually measure 41 according to Rivendell who I purchased my 46mm Marathons from. Still, I was unable to squeeze in fenders. The widest tire/fender combo I've managed has been 40mm Marathons (actual 38) and a SKS P45.

    I have 45mm cascadia fenders, rear does not work w/ these tires, and 22.5-25mm rims. I suppose wider rims could make a tire less tall?

    Awesome build. Was the disc mount added to a cross-check fork or is that a disc-trucker fork? Plan to leave it raw?

    The fork is a surly long haul trucker fork. I have clear coated the frame. To try and keep it looking ruff as I am on a touring trip at the moment and don't want my bike to get stolen. (again) You can view more at Bicycle rust & Foam dust - For the love of life, adventure & freedom...

    thanks! the racks are quite old actually. the front is a specialized, and the rear is a blackburn. I had a 5' long slat of Brazilian cherry that ive been waiting to use for something special. also- its just a raw linseed oil finish.

    I have just mounted the same tires with a Rohloff on my CC. They guy who laced them told me they would never fit, but there's (very little) room to spare.

    Just installed a Rohloff installed. The torsion bar blends in fine, not too ugly and the shifter was installed via a custom spacer below the stem, allowing a drop bar.
    Very happy with it.

    Was always told best shifting happens when the axle is directly above the derailleur bolt hole. That's where I started when building my Cross Check, and have kept it there since. (Except for the times when it was single speed). But my 1x9 friction shifting might be more tolerant of non-optimal setup.

    Until I steal enough money for a KRAMPUS my 4-year-old Cross-Check is doubling as my geared mountainbike. It's pretty capable (and I love riding it) but I'd probably be better off with a Troll or Monkey as I gravitate towards dirt.

    Before and after, Ergon GC2 grips have cured my numb hand issues.

    And a La Cruz Disc Fork & BB7 because I live in a hilly area.

    Versatility

    Last weekend I was coming back from a mixed terrain ride on my CC and stopped by a cafe for some post ride coffee. I bike locked up out front caught my eye. It was a CC set up quite differently than mine (drops, gears, 32mm tires). I started talking with the owner, and like me, his CC has gone through multiple set-ups. You gotta love the CC versatility. I think the guy's name was Andrew. Here's his CC:

    I bought a 50cm CC in black for my wife earlier this year, I wanted to get her the Robin Egg Blue but it would have been a few month wait. Now that I really look at her ride it I think the shorter top tube of the 46cm would have been better. I normally ride a 52-53cm but based on the TT length the 50cm CC would fit me perfectly.

    If I was any kind of husband I would buy her the 46cm Robin Egg Blue CC and I would inherit the 50cm black CC. Yeah, that's the ticket I'm really doing this for her, the fact that I would have myself a beautiful black CC is secondary. It's all about making her happy, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

    So, I've got an older (2006 I think) 'cross-check. Dark metallic green. It's a pretty color, but there are a few rust spots now, and a spot where I had a crack welded. Thinking of stripping it this winter and painting it sparkly purple. Or something else wild. Any other goofy ideas? I've had a hot pink bike before, and don't want to be quite that bright...

    You might try this one if you're running a triple:
    Shimano Deore XT front derailer - 17160

    Or this one if you're running a double:
    Shimano Front Derailleur CX70, dbsm

    Nah, it's been subtle it's whole life (the dark green looks black from a distance). Time for something wild! It probably won't last much longer anyway with the way I've been riding it lately.

    Winter commuter.

    So yet again my Cross Check gets the call-up for winter commuting duty. It was nice having it set-up with drops for a while but I have a couple of other bikes set-up with drops. I stripped it of gears and put the Nitto Albatross bars back on. I may switch them out for a Moloko bar later on. The tires are Schwalbe Marathons 700x38. They're great for commuting and the occasional dirt excursion. The fenders are SKS P45s that are about 5yrs old. Should they finally crack I'll replace them with the newere P50s.

    It's been fun riding this bike around today. It makes me want to swap out the drops on my LHT...

    2012 56cm Cross Check

    I live 5 miles from an awesome XC trail, I ride this out there, put in six or so miles of tough xc riding and head back home. Running 38 x 16 ratio. Fix/Free rear wheel. 35c Kenda Small Block 8's

    Are you happy with these Shimano pedals? Ive got the same and i like the versitality. Altough they ar not fun to use offroad not clipped in. Iam thinking about to put some pins trough the outer frame of the pedal.

    The pedals do what I need them to. I wear clipless shoes 95% of the time. Only time I use the platforms is on quick beer runs or whatever. They're worthless offroad.

    I don't think so. I think this is pretty much the max, with a fender. I have those tires and fit them on the CC before but there's no clearance for fenders.

    It is. Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 28x2.0" ( 46mm real width ) on delgado cross, SKS PET fenders, 53-55mm wide. Mine is black.

    I've fit those tires(they really measure around 42-44) in mine with fenders, but its super tight in back. Front fits a bit cleaner but gets rub-age on rough surfaces and such girations.

    Ordered some p50 fenders and some Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 700x40 wire beads from Universal Cycles for my new Cross Check frame. Hoping everything fits. Post some pics here within a week or so.

    My latest addition, an entry level Sanyo dyno hub and Avenir light:



    I took a quick spin around the block tonight, and it puts out a decent amount of light. Certainly enough for riding at night, though I miss the ability to look around corners like I can with a helmet mounted light.

    Sure. No room for fenders with Beaver. Well, you can almost literally squeeze beavers and fenders, but there will be not enough mud clearance between fender and tire.

    Rear tire is Marathon Supreme 28x2.0 ( 46mm real width ). Beaver exist in only one size, 29x2.0. Width is exact 50mm on Salsa Delgado Cross, and fit is very tight in the fork, because of crown. If you use narrower rims, like 17mm inner width, there will be 1mm more space on each side.

    My fiancé and her Cross Check got hit by a car 4 months ago. One shoulder ligament repair surgery and a new fork later, here she is on her first ride back.

    After an altercation with a stop-sign-blowing Volkswagen. Bad picture from heat of the moment documentation. Front wheel tacoed. Haven't had time to really check for any frame damage. Other bits scratched and scuffed, with a shattered taillight. Fortunately no bodily injuries for either party! I put a good back-print in her hood though. Something to remember me by. Officer assisted in exchange of information. I'll be contacting her insurance provider.

    I am also off the bike after getting hit by a car in August, waiting on the shoulder to regrow. Good to hear the other car-bike folks are some amount of better.

    Wheelset from pregnant wife's bike + 29er tires = Monster Cross Check!

    Since my wife is too pregnant to ride her roadbike, I thought it would be a shame for her wheelset to go idle. Changing tires is such a PITA when I want to monstercross the CC. Fortunately, her wheels are built with gloriously beefy Mavic CXP22 rims just begging for big knobby tires. Turns out the CXP22's have the same width as the Mavic MA3's on my bike. Easy swap. I'm in business After the first ride, the road cassette that was on there made for steeper gearing than I prefer for offroad endevers. Thankfully, I had an 8 speed mountain cassette in the garage. Threw that on there and...perfection. Another easy swap thanks to the magic of friction shifting. The Cross Check is so versatile.

    Yes, she is wonderful. I should have been clearer, that's my CC - I just stole her wheels to run knobby tires so I don't have to take the road tires off my normal wheels. Her bike is hanging, wheelless, in the shed. And no, she hasn't noticed yet. The new baby comes in Feb. I should be good as long as I have her bike back together before the weather warms up in the spring.
