    2008 Karate Monkey build

Just picked up a mint 2008 Karate Monkey 18" frame and fork, did an even trade for my 2009 Stumpjumper Comp 29er frame. Now I've got to swap over all of the components, many upgraded, to complete the KM. Should be finished by next week.

    Here she is.

Just need a Thomson seatpost clamp (I'm picky) and the project is complete.
I may also remove the white Surly sticker and go black on black like I did with my Cross Check. Haven't decided yet. Merely aesthetic.

But the main issue I'm having.....
    - I can't seem to get the rear wheel correct, didn't tighten up the skewer enough the first time I took it for a test drive and the wheel popped out. No big deal, was just doing 1mph around a lot, and the wheel stayed within the dropouts. Now I did my best to place the wheel centered in the dropouts evenly and tightened up the rear skewer nice and firm, but can't seem to get it perfect... the tire either rubs the FD, or is too far away from it, or too left or too right (on the stays). Any suggestions?

Monkey nuts. They are essentially spacers that go in the front part of the dropouts to remedy the problem you describe. They came with the frame when I bought mine.

See the article at surlybikes.com, click on "The Information Hole" and then "Karate Monkey and Front Derailleurs". (I don't have enough posts here yet to post a link.) Runnning a rear derailleur, I'd want the axle all the way forward in the dropout. If that causes FD interference, either the tire or FD can be changed, or Monkey Nuts can be used to locate the wheel more rearward.
