    1 x 10 Surly Cross Check - Gearing advice?

I've just purchased a Surly Cross Check and I'm looking at setting it up as a 1 x10.

How does a 44t front chainring coupled with a 11-28, 10spd cassette sound? Will this give me plenty of 'bottom end' for tackling long or steep climbs?

I run a 44x12-27 on an IF Ti Planet-X around the streets and trails of Pittsburgh. I am able to climb every hill that I have tried, and we do afterall have the world's steepest street in Pittsburgh at 37% grade:

Overall, I am quite pleased with the 1x10 setup, and I have now made all of my race CX bikes 1x10.

Rad. Cheers for the info. Wasn't sure if a 44 front ring would be too big (or small). I looked at alot of single speed 'cross bikes to get an idea of what front rings people were running.

Got a pic of the Planet-X to post up?
