I like haveing the rear derailer , gives me another thing to grind on , I live near hills and have to ride up them frequently and a derailer adds to the real MTB feel
i like my derailleur cause it give me some more options. if my legs arent feelin up to it or something that day. or if i am pretending i know how to ride trials and wanna use a lower gear.
Real men don't need gears. 2:1 on 26" wheels should get you up just about any hill. I guess if your bike is a rattletrap, the derailer could hide some of the noises.
I run gears. I like them for DJ and Street. but I wont ride them in the park. always screw me up. but my bike is going SS soon, I only have trouble with them when reverting or landing backwards
Gears are great if you're gonna be riding everywhere and up everything on your bike. Otherwise, screw 'em! With the right ratio, you don't need gears. Just another thing to break. I run singlespeed, and I'm likin' it! Of course, I am getting the ratio changed, but that's not the point.
The only way I'd run gears is on that concept frame by Evil, with a completely internal gear shifter around the crank. That thing is the sh1+!
Anywhere that you have the potential to drop your bike a lot, you should consider going single speed. Park/Street for sure. DJ maybe. NS/DH keep your gears.
I'm suprised how close the voting is. I'd figure SS would have a huge majority.
Personally, I like the SS. Less crap to worry about, rattle, and break. And less weight. I rock a 32-13... cuz I'm a man like that!!! Actually, I think it feels perfect to me because I grew up racing BMX.
i run gears cause i use one bike for everything, dh, north shore, dj, street. if i had a bike just for dj and street i'd run a ss
