    XX1 36 - 42 jump?

    I'm going to be buying an Ibis HDR and am debating between the XT and X01 groupsets. The places I ride are hilly, southern Oregon and Tahoe, so i need low gears which would be covered by a 30 or even 28t front chainring.

    The issue I'm getting hung up on is the large jump between the 42 and 36 rear cogs. I haven't ridden an XX1/X01 setup, so I'd like to hear your thoughts on the gear spacing in real life.

    TIA

    The jump between 36 and 42 looks huge on paper but in real life it doesn't seem like that much.

    I asked the same question a few months ago before buying XX1. It doesn't feel weird at all to me. The jump from second smallest to smallest feels fine as well.

    Awesome--that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

    Yup, its all good. Hopefully they ironed out the issues on the XO1 and its not the same as XX1.

    I guess "on paper" is a matter of perspective, from my perspective it does not look huge on paper, it looks about the same as the rest. It's easy to just do the math and see what the difference is, XX1 is configured as: 10-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32-36-42

    Ratio's of adjacent cogs (could just as well be represented as difference in gear inches or etc, but this should suffice for us):
    10t to 12t -> .83
    12t to 14t -> .86
    14t to 16t -> .875
    16t to 18t -> .89
    18t to 21t -> .86
    21t to 24t -> .875
    24t to 28t -> .86
    28t to 32t -> .875
    32t to 36t -> .89
    36t to 42t -> .86

    Numbers closer to 1 are of course a smaller difference between the two gears, as you can plainly see the biggest jump between any two gears is between the 10t and 12t cogs and there are 3 other jumps between cogs that are just as large as the 36t to 42t jump.

    It was just a term. Regardless how you look at it, XX1 is pure junk. I hate mine.
