    New stuff on Epic

I put newe brake pads on back and front. New XTR pedals! Looking at Easton Haven Carbon or Roval Carbon 29's. Any help with that decision? Anyone know about the adapter to use on an 11 epic expert carbon and putting 135mm hubs on back from 142+?

    Lets see,

    Went on a plannned ride with two cousins 3.5 hrs away, and 3 miles into a 10 mile loop, I busted the ***** out of my chain, and messed up the cassette pretty good. So I upgraded the following;

    I went 2x10 w/
    Sram 10 speed cassette 12-36
    X9 Long Cage RD
    X9 Shifter
    New KMC X10SL Gold Chain

Other things I have done are:
Thompson Elite Stem (after finally finding the right length and rise)
Went 2bliss with some Renegade Controls 1.95 ( I love how fast they are, but as you might be able to see in the picture, they are caked with mud. NOT A TIRE FOR MUD OR WET LEAVES OVER ANYTHING!! : ) I have some 2.2 Purgatory's coming for the wet fall season.

I debadged the C29ssmax wheels, and partially debadged the Manitou Tower Fork.

    Been spoiling my evo.
Air sleeve service on the evo, new seals, slick honey and float fluid.
    Bearing re-grease on the clevis.
    Cassette chain and chainset de-grease.
New tyres ordered as can't find Butcher control's in the UK so a pair of Hans Dampf trail star ordered.
Rovals serviced and new blue tubeless strip applied.
Thomson 70mm stem back on and easton 685 bar.
Haven stem and Answer bar relegated to the on-one 456.
ODI red troy lee grips put on.
    all stripped and cleaned.
Hopefully tyres here tomorrow and am allowed back on the bike after 4 weeks off because of a broken finger.

Just a little service. Nothing wrong with taking it apart, cleaning it till it's perfect, greasing er back up, and be on your merry way. Just the OCD side of me.

    mystery noise solved

I just added a zip tie around my RD cable and chainstay on my Epic Expert 29er. I was hearing this strange noise on some rides and it turned to be the tire knobbies hitting the cable on occasion.

I picked up an S-Works Ground Control 26x2.3 for my 2011 Stumpy Comp. I originally intended it put it on the front and move the stock S-Works Purgatory 2.2 to the back, replacing the waaaaay too small The Captain Control 2.0. The Captain had too little braking and cornering traction, and never felt very solid on jumps and rough descents.

After mounting, I noticed the Ground Control seemed pretty narrow for a 2.3. After remounting both other tires and comparing all three, I found that the Ground Controls width fell in between the 2.2 Purg and the 2.0 Captain. The Ground Control was taller than The Captain, and on par with the Purgatory.

This worked out pretty well. I was happy with the purgatory, so I left it mounted on the front and put the GC on the back. It's made a huge difference. Braking and cornering are much improved, and the bike feels a lot more solid in the rear. Before the rear suspension felt somewhat harsh over roots and jumps, but now feels much better. Rolling resistance feels about the same, which is impressive considering it's wider, taller, and much more grippy.

Aside from the questionable sizing, this is a great tire. I'd highly recommend it for anyone looking to replace a The Captain, especially if you're wanting to beef up the rear on your stumpy. Why Spesh would put such a tiny rear tire on a 140mm travel bike is beyond me, but this was definitely a good solution.

Fixed a horrid noise emanating from the rear derailleur area of my Epic Carbon Evo R 29er. Thought it was the derailleur, but wasn't 100% sure. Rebuilt it, no change in noise. Rebuilt the shifter(I'm now an expert on the Sram X9 shifter assembly), no change. Fiddled with it tonight and figured out the cassette lock ring was loose, causing the cogs to do some weird things. I have the Roval wheels, so I pulled the cassette apart, greased the assembly, put it back on, and then tightened the cassette down as tight as I dared.

Put it back together, and guess what? No more noise! I was about ready to resort to buying a $200 derailleur... Woot Woot!

Dug it out of the basement....

A few weeks back I dug my Rockhopper Comp (1993 if I remember correctly). Half the gears are not working. Not sure if I am going to put money into it.....or buy something new in the Spring.

    Maybe I will do both

Thanks, she loves it & I don't think she'll ever part with it. As long as the frame holds up, I don't mind upgrading components as they wear.

I just change my pedals again! Time atac Aliums , bent the first set of Aliums on the first ride on our trails.
Anyone have any suggestions on time pedals that won't bend , if I go to the more expensive one like the xs or roc are they less likely to bend LMK? I bent every single pedal I put on any bike , and if the pedals do hold up , the crank arms or brackets bend, I'm only 156lbs and need advice. FSR XC 09.

I dont know, it's the factory stem. I was looking at replacing it one of these days, but I want to upgrade the drivetrain to X9 or XT components first. I'll replace it when I replace the seat post & handle bars.

That just doesn't seem right. I've bent seat posts and saddles but never pedals or cranks and even those were on a hardtail.

I've done a bit of downhill on my FSR XC so what on earth are you doing to bend them?

    Spot the difference!

No its not that the chicken is gone. Now my Ground Control Aim with a Mc Pherson strut now has a FSR rear end. I am lucky to be an industrial electrician and a welder owed me a favor so I got the tabs welded onto my frame and I installed the back end from a damaged frame I got on ebay for 99c Why bother? why not?

When I sit on it the shock sags enough to improve that angle. I have ridden it on the road but Im yet to test it going downhill. I put the chicken back on so it looks much better now.
