Want to upgrade Rockhopper

I have an '05 entry level Rockhopper and have really enjoyed it for the past 3 seasons. I've beaten it up and I want to upgrade the components a little at a time. I'm fairly handy with tools and I've got a nice tool kit with most bike tools in it. I want to change out the brake levers (Alivio) first since I tacoed the right one, but I noticed that this is hooked to the shifter. I want my new brake levers to be compatible with the current V-brake with the intention to upgrade to disc brakes in the near future. Any recommendations on how to approach this? Any recommendations on specific brake levers/shifters to make this possible? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Avid Speed Dial 7 levers are great, and cheap. And a good choice if you go with mechanical disc brakes later. You'll need new shifters too...Shimano LX are solid. Look on eBay, I got some new for $33.

The most noticeable upgrade you can do is lighter wheels/tubes/tires.

AS Byookanun said you have plenty of options to choose from. Here's what I did last year on my 2007 Hopper.

Sun Singletrack rims on XT hubs
Panaracer XC Pro Fire tires with Kenda lightweight tubes
Deore Hollowtech cranks and BB
Drive magnesium pedals
XT front derailleur
2007 Sram X-7 rear derailleur
Sram PG 980 casette 9 speed
Sram chain with powerlink
Avid BB-7
Sram x-7 shifters
Sette seatpost( at the time pic was taken)
WTB rocket v saddle
Thomson seatpost ( not pictured)
