Thoughts on '09 Stumpjumper FSR Comp (vs. '10)?

This is crossposted from another forum, but I figured it might get a bit more response here...

I'm looking to pick up my first FS ride and a fellow rider in my area has an '09 Stumpjumper FSR Comp that he is looking to unload at what seems like a really good price. He got the bike in August, rode it a few times throughout the summer and is moving on to a Blur LT so this is up for grabs.

The Stumpjumper was on my short list anyways, and while I was thinking of buying new this spring, his asking price is right and a lot less than I had initially planned on spending (which works out well, considering that my wife and I just found out we're expecting our first). The bike is annodized black, stock, with the exception of an upgraded rear shock (from the Triad to a new 2010 rp23 with boost valve).

I was wondering what the consensus was on the '09 vs the '10 model (and components). Given that he is asking a bit less than I was planning on spending, I would have a little money banked for some additional upgrades. That being said, what would be the next upgrade you would make?

Finally, what do you think is a fair price for this bike? I am planning a test ride next week, so I will be able to see what condition it is in, but from the pictures and his description, it seems like it is in great condition!

Let me know what you think?

    09 vs 10 stumpjumper comp...

Hey im in the same predicament atm, however as i missed the early specials im unable to find an 09 in med here in Aus

Im also weighing up either a 10 Giant trance X2 and 10 Trek Fuel EX8 which are similar in price and build spec (the stumpjumper however gets full lockout in the rear shock).
In terms of components specs between the 09 and 10 models itís pretty much the same, the only main difference between the 2 model is the 10 gets an extra 10mm in suspension travel to 130mm vs the 09 models which has 120mm, aside from that its pretty much identical, same fork, same Triad shock, brakes, cockpit components and even tires.

In terms of modifications in my opinion probably seats and tires, you didn't mention the price the 09 is for however based on the above i would personally go for the 09 if it is indeed in good condition.

Just a side note man i wished i lived in the US, the 10 comp rrp in US is $2200, in AUS land the rrp for the same bike after rate exchange is over US $3500!!!
So whatever price/bike you end up with just thank god you don't live in the over taxed land known as Australia!

Wow if thats the case and the bike in good condition then take the 09, thats a pretty awesome price plus you get a better shock in the RP23... that is i mean if you really, really want that extra 10mm in travel that the 10 has

Good luck either way! Don't forget to post some pics of it if you do buy it!

I wonder why he thinks a Blut LT is an upgrade?? He will want the SJ back after a few rides.

The 2010 Stumpy has 20mm more travel than the 2009, not 10. That puts it at a full 140mm, or 5.5", which is the same travel as the Blur LT. The geometry of the 2010 is revised too, and is slacker, and really a bit more aggressive than the Blur LT (shorter chainstays). So basically the 09 and 10 stumpys are different animals.

Good riddance, 2009 was a shite year anyway.

    09 vs 10

Hey i think the thread was referring to the comp models only:

    http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...enuItemId=9248
'FORKFox Float 130 RL, 130mm travel, compression and rebound adj. w/ LO, alloy steerer'
    vs
    http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...2&menuItemId=0
'FORKFox Float 120 RL, 120mm travel, compression and rebound adj. w/ LO, alloy steerer'

Its only the Elite or above for the 10 that you get 140mm because they use Talas instead of F120/F130, actually i didn't realise the elites get adjustable travel and a Talas i might have to reconsider my options again

Ok ok ok i admit defeat my bad

BTW that's slightly odd usually theres more travel up front then rear but the stumpy's the other way round?

Hmm now that i realise this it might have too much travel for me might stick with a trace X or Fuel EX8...

Also sorry for high jacking your thread man!

The FOX Float fork on the front end of the '10 Stumpy Comp is factory set at 130mm via a 10mm spacer, which can be removed to restore the full 140mm travel. Should also slacken the front end a hair.

I just sold my '09 Comp for 1,000 euros. It was a fab machine and I would recommend it to anyone. If you're thinking about the '10 Comp, I doubt it would be much better than the '09, you would need to go for an Elite and get the full 140mm experience, that would make more sense. I've bought a new '09 pro carbon!! Now we're talking, goes like a rocket, very light and agile and looks amazing, loaded with some gorgeous kit.

The '09 Float can be raised to 130mm by removing the factory installed spacers as well.

And unless i'm totally wrong...The OEM Triad shock on the '10 FSR can't be upgraded due to the custom mounting shaft..So if you don't like it, you are stuck with it. And if it's like the other Triads...It sucks.

On another note..Trumpus could you get info on what size RP23 he installed on the bike?
