    rim replacement versus new wheel?

my rear wheel has very limited life left given dings in rim, and several truings. curious about 3 things from any spec stumpy riders (since stock wheels are particular to Specialized):
    1) has anyone replaced just the rim on their rear wheel or has it always been better to get a whole new wheel? rear hub not not worth trying to salvage to keep using?
    2) any issues with just replacing rear wheel or have most used the stock wheel fail (rear) as the time to fully replace both rear and front wheels?
    3) has anyone ever bought a replacement stock wheel from Spec? or has that been a ridiculous proposition for most? (as seems intuitively for me, but my riding has improved greatly so hard to put all the blame on stock wheel quality in fairness)

bike is 2011 spec stumpy elite (26er) with stock wheels
riding style has been/will continue to be 'aggressive trail'
    weight is 200-205lbs with gear
have not kept track of mileage, but fair to say it's decent amount and will continue through all seasons

appreciate any feedback or shared experience to help with my question above. trying to look for best bang for buck.
