Looking for advice about a suitable replacement crankset for a 2002 Stumpjumper FSR XC. The middle and large rings of the original Specialized Strongarm II crankset are worn after 12 years and the large ring has a tooth missing.
I wondering if the Shimano XT M770 crankset will work on the bike. I have it on my 2008 Enduro and I'm happy with it. But the BB on the Stumpy is an Octalink cartridge BB where the bearings are inside the BB shell (i.e. the BB is not much wider than the shell in the frame - 68mm). The BB of the XT crankset is the external variety which adds about 6mm of width on each side of the bike. I think this will move the chainrings that much further from the frame than the old crankset. The front mech is the e-type and doesn't look like it can be moved further away from the frame and even if that were possible the BB bearing cup will still be between it and the small ring.
Anyone have this crankset on their 2002 Stumpy? Or can someone recommend an alternative?
