front Der shifting problem in 04 stumpjumper FSR

I just finished building an 04 Stumpjumper FSR and I seem to have a shifting problem I can't resolve. Here's the setup ( a real mix)

    Shifter XT
Front Der XT top swing (seatpost mount 34.9)
Cranks set is Deore (hey it was super cheap and decent quality)
chain is HG-91 I'm running an 8spd drivertrain

problem is When I shift to the large ring, the outside edge of the der is slightly rubbing the chain. When I adjust the shifter with the adjustment barrel so that it's not longer rubbing, It won't shift down to the smallest chain ring!!

I'm wondering if this is a problem with the chain ( being a wider 8spd chain), Seems to me that the shfiter doesn't pull quite enough cable when it's shifting as there is some sinwg left in the der after it's shifted to the large ring

I've built other bikes before without running into this issue. Is it possible that the 04 stumpy needs an E-type der?

Any thoughts before I hand it over to the LBS for their assist?
