These types of questions are a dime a dozen on this forum. I don't blame you for asking and the search function is a little weak here. I had an 04 Comp so I know it is heavy (have 07 Marathon now).
If you have $500, you can get superlight wheels from Larry at MtnHigh. Lighter than crossmax (swiss rims, hope pro II hubs). OEM wheels are boat anchors. If that is too much cash right now do then (not in order):
1. Go carbon handle bars.
2. Seatpost Ritchey WCS is inexpensive
3. Seat
4. Tires (and tubes).
5. brakes are heavy (deore I think you have).
6. CASSETTE GET XT from Nashbar (super cheap right now see best deals section)
Hit the rotational mass first. Lighten your bike and more pedal efficiency (tires, rims, etc.). I bet you can drop more than a pound on cassette, tires and tubes and handlebars.
My base Epic weighs 31 pounds. I think the $6,000 S Works are about 26 which isn't too big of a difference considering the Carbon frame. After spending well over $500, you'll only be able to cut about 2 pounds. Just train a little harder and save your money. The Epic is an incredible bike. Enjoy
I have an 07 S-Works carbon. It weighs 24.1 pounds including Shimano 959 SPD pedals and Ergon handgrips. So the weight savings is more than your estimate - still expensive, though.....
Mavic Crossmax SLR with carbon hub and titanium skewers
XTR Crankset
S-works carbon bar, stem and possibly seatpost?
