I've only had my Spesh 2013 Epic Comp for a couple months. Heck, it's only been available a couple months. Well, today tragedy struck. Going about 1 mph through a tight root section I had to unclip and the bike went over. End of the lap, I see a nickel sized dent on the side of the down tube. Needless to say, I'm very sad.
First question is, should I be concerned about structural integrity? I can post a pic up if need be, but it's size of a nickel and looks like someone leaned up on the side of a car too hard. It's halfway down the down tube on the side, slightly towards the top side.
Second question, are dents covered under the lifetime frame warranty? Or is catastrophic failure necessary?
Your lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects. Specialized does honor a "crash replacement" though, in the event of user error. They'll reward you for being a specialized customer and give you a deal on a frame or complete.
I don't think you should be concerned with a dent so small unless it's a really deep one. You can always call them and ask for their advice. Why not go straight to the horse's mouth?
That's a good idea. It just happened tonight and I was gonna take it into the shop I bought it at and see what they thought, but it sounds like my question's already been answered. I guess I'll send Spesh the pic and see if they think it's a problem. In the mean time I'ma just keep on riding . As my GF said, it gives it character lol. I'm still sad though .
Good thing you didn't have the carbon frame! I wouldn't worry about the dent, I have a big dent in my rear triangle on my 08 stumpy fsr and have had no problems what so ever in the past 2 years since the dent. I was concerned at first and showed 2 different dealers and they told me not to worry about it, however if it was cracked I would be worried.
And, nope, you probably don't need to worry about the dent. Keep an eye on the tube around the dent after rides. Likely it will be fine and not fail catastrophically if it ever does but rather start to crack near that point. Then, get the crash replacement deal. Just make sure you hope and pray every time you hit a drop .
That dent doesn't look like it would cause any issues, but if I were you I would still call specialized and email them a picture of that just to see what they say.
This story has an interesting end to it. I was having some issues with my fit so I decided to have it professionally fitted, a service conveniently offered by the shop I bought the bike at. They determined the frame was too small for me. It's a size large and I'm 6'1". The owner of the store himself ordered the bike for me at one of our club meetings. He, and I agreed, judged by my height that a large would be appropriate. Turns out I have freakishly long legs and a comparatively small torso.
When he came in the next morning after the fitting he saw my bike sitting there with the seat jacked up about an inch past the minimum insertion line. Even though I feel equally responsible, he felt it was his fault. He immediately ordered a brand new XL complete bike at their expense. They moved over my handlebars, seat and pedals, finished the fitting and sent me on my way with a brand spanking new bike. They're keeping the large size bike to use as a shop demo.
I'm happy . A huuuuuuge thanks and good karma going out to Tom at the Bicyclery in West Palm Beach. You've got a customer for life.
No more dent now, but I have to take the reflectors off again... *sigh* life is so hard...
They're really good people. Everyone who works there is associated with the mountain biking community and the local club. The owner of the store is the current president, and different people there are involved in management of the club and trail maintenance. They often do really fun events for the community from a BBQ and beer with some trials obstacles set up, bike movies on a projector in their parking lot and recently a two day, 120 mile ride around Lake Okeechobee. They also happen to all be really nice.
So, they were already high on my list. That they would put themselves so far out there for me just blows my mind. I never expected or would have even thought to suggest this. Even if they hadn't done it they would still be aces in my book.
