I purchased a used 2007 FSR Elite that has developed a creak under heavy pedaling - standing and during hard efforts seated. I am going to take the cranks off and grease all of the surfaces, but I would also like to remove, clean, grease, and reassemble all of the rear pivot bolts.
First, is this something that a mechanically competent person can do? Since I am not sure that it is actually the problem, I would like to avoid having to pay a shop lots of money for this if I can do it myself.
If it is doable by a normal person, can anyone give me the torque values for all of the bolts?
I had the same creak on my 07 stumpy expert. Greased crank, seatpost, took off the rearshock, still creaked. What i didn't do is grease the bottom pivot of the shock. Did that, no more creak. It is definitely owner serviceable. Go to Specialized's website and you will be able to see the manuals for diff. year model bikes. Good luck:thumbsup:
I'm going to start the "find-the-creak" odyssey myself, but for the rear shock, did you remove the pivot bolt and grease the bearing surfaces, or did you remove the part of the shock that the pivot bolt goes through and apply grease to all of the surfaces?
At this point, I am guessing that it is one of the pivots, instead of the seatpost or crank. I can push the rear wheel side to side pretty hard while holding the frame, and cause the creak to appear. I am not touching the cranks or seatpost when I do this. Still, I am going to take the cranks off tomorrow and grease them, as well as greasing the seatpost liberally.
I greased the surfaces of the "connecting brace" and shock pivot where it comes in contact with the left and right halves of the suspension linkage. Torque it to specs, and voila! Creak be gone . Good luck
