'11 SJ FSR EVO RP23 shock on a '10 SJ FSR Comp?

Forgive me if this has been covered somewhere else (I did look, but didn't see anything definitlive), but I am interested in installing the new 2011 Stumpjumper FSR EVO RP23 shock on my 2010 Stumpjumper FSR Comp.

Flat question - Can this be done?

I stopped by a local shop today and the guy kind of blew me off. He was very nice, but also misinformed about the EVO having a RP23 (he said it was still a Triad) and couldn't seem to understand why I would want to move away from the Triad, so I didn't pursue it any further with him. I called another shop, but the guy that I wanted to talk to wasn't available, so here I am.

I'm assuming that will be a $5-600.00 mistake if I flat out ask to have the parts ordered (EVO shock and yoke) and it doesn't work, so I'm hoping that someone out there can tell me if this will work...or not.

Here's why it wont work, the 2010 SJ Comp's Shock size is: 7.875x1.9 and the 2011 SJ Expert EVO is 7.75x2.0. Also the compression of the EVO's RP23 is setup for the geometry of the EVO and would ride differently on any other bike

I've been thinking of doing it to my 2011 SJ Elite. I've done a bunch of measuring and it appears the RP23 from the Evo will swap over to the 2011 Elite without swap the linkage. Not sure about the 2010 models.
I'd like to keep the brain for regular trail riding on rolling terrrain, but swap to the RP23 for the trails with long climbs and long descents or when I'm going to do some jumping.

Mr. Lynch, the shock for the 2011 SJ Elite is a 7.75x1.9, so the EVO shock should technically work for you, it will just have more travel, go for it!

Is the linkage on the comp models different? I wonder why the 10/11 Comp has a slightly different size shock. I've heard of people swapping the brain shock for the triad and vise-versa on the 10/11 models, so I'm not sure what is exactly different or needed.

On my wife's 2010 FSRxc I swapped the crappy 7.5x1.75 X-fusioin shock for a 7.5x2.0 Fox RP2 with no ill affect. It rides 1000x better, and the extra travel doesn't cause any parts of the frame to contact. I've also heard of guys swapping the Triad on the 09 SJ comp (7.25x1.75) for the 7.5x2.0 RP23. It raises the bottom bracket and adds a little travel and doesn't seem to cause any issues.

The reason I'm saying all that is I dont think going from a 7.875x1.9 to a 7.75x1.9/2.0shock is going to cause any issues. A very slightly lower bottom bracket and a much better shock is all you will get.

Bumping this thread. Has anyone tried switching an rp23 in and do you get the same travel and angles of an Evo?

Why not get a custom made shock from Push? I'm thinking of going that route on my '11 Stumpy Elite.

Read the original topic. 2010's have a triad. Which push won't touch. Also it has a proprietary shock mount so you can't just swap out a rp23's.

The op and I both are trying to find a aftermarket rear shock solution..

Wow. Just read the link given. I stand corrected, I have a 2010 sj with a triad with no brain. I wonder if the Evo rp23s will still work? I'd order one tomorrow...

I'm the one with the Evo RP23 on my 2011 Elite. It is a very simple swap and it will work on the 2010s. You can swap out the Brain or the Triad for the RP23s.

I rode it on long ride today and the RP23s is a huge improvement.

    How about 2012 on a 2011?

I have a 2011 FSR Comp 29er, Specialized website gives the shock dimensions as 7.75"x1.8", or converting into mm, 196.85x45.72mm

The 2012 FSR EVO 29er has shock dimensions listed as 197x46mm.

Figuring there must be some rounding off of numbers done here, this looks like an exact match to me. So what's a new RP23 replacement from a Specialized dealer gonna run?

So to replace, all you do is unbolt the shock at the front and the two bolts at the rear of the linkage, and I'm assuming, a fourth bolt that screws through the front of the linkage into the shock? Swap the new shock in, and then re-install?

13 SJ FSR EVO COMP, and I want to install a 13 SJ FSR EVO EXPERT shock on it. Spc website says it's the same size. Spc says it won't work. Anybody do it?

it will work fine. I kept my 2011 RP23s as a backup shock for my 2013 Expert Evo. Specialized said that it doesnt fit, but it fits just fine. The 2010-13 swap fine (on the 26") and I would be shock if the 2014 stuff didn't work too.
