    Spillway - Norco,La

I've been getting in a lot of laps at the Spillway Trail and just wanted to let everyone know what a great ride this is. The single track is buffed in and the new cut section is a really nice addition. I've ridden this trail several times on both my geary and my ss and other than a bypass for a new pipeline thats going in its all flowing single track. There is a 4' teeter totter and a few log overs with ladders to keep it interesting. Just keep an eye out for the gators.

good to see you are able to log some miles.... I've done a couple of the GCBC road rides... an 8spd 29er with street slicks does not make a road bike... lol.

I need to get out and ride "not bethel" sometime.... lol. I'll be passing through N.O. on the 18th, but I'm pretty sure the Mrs's wouldn't be happy if I brought the bike along on the honeymoon.

I took the geary out to the Spillway to get in a few laps and they have cut even more new trail. Now the trail is about 5.5 miles of singletrack. It just keeps getting better out there.

Hey John - when we going to hook up for a ride? Got to show off my new Superlight! Yep, eating my words against the no suspension & one-f'ing-speed routine. It's all good though.

Good photos and thanks for giving props to the trail. I've been out there every weekend and some here lately. Off to Brookhaven this Saturday though.

Hopefully we'll catch up with you at the next meeting (if not before). Bug Eric to get off his lazy ass and schedule one.

    Our Pal Dan Dickerson

Just To Let Everyone Know. Dan Dickerson Was Involved I A Skiing Accident Last Week. He Had To Have Emergency Surgery. It Is Not Looking Good For Him. As Of Right Now The Doctors Said He Is Going To Be Paralyzed From The Chest Down. I Am Working On A Fund Raiser For His Family. It Will Be Held At The Spillway (the Date Is Not Determined Yet). I Am Having A Meeting At The Spillway This Sunday At 11:00am To Talk About What We Are Going To Do. Bring Your Bike. We Will Ride After The Meeting. If You Have Any Questions Feel Free To Give Me A Call 504-319-7348. It Is Going To Cost His Family Alot Of Money Even With The Insurance. Anything We Could Do To Help Will Help Out Greatly.

    Thank You,

Rat and Stu we need to get some "no horses" signs out there soon ... not only are they tearing the trail all to pieces but now they are removing log overs and basically sanitizing the trail ... except for the mounds of horse crap that are now all over the trail. there was a good turn out of riders today out there but they dont seem to know where the trail head is or which direction to ride the trail ... the street signs are cool but we really need to get lots of no horses and direction arrows and do not enter signs up. this is not meant as a rant as much as a heads up for you guys.

I havent been out there in a week but my guess is its not ridable due to high water ... we have had a few nice dry days but the canal is high and the river is still high so

I know the SS race that was going to be this Sunday has been postponed because of wet trail conditions if that tells you anything

Ever seen this on a Trail?

    From NOMAMBO.net

Re: Spillway Conditions - ALL UPDATES HERE!
    by vudu » Sun May 31, 2009 9:01 pm

yesterday, stu and i went to check on the trail. the water has receeded some from last saturday. still has water in the cleared pipeline that is clearly visible from the levee. we entered the trail at Dan's trail. the lower part of that section that heads to the levee was under water, as we headed towards rat tail we heard a large splash. thought it could have been a gator. we cut through to seinfeld and rode to the back. there is 1 tree down right after the up and over and water is still in parts of s. canada. we turned around after we reached 5 minutes alone and rode back up to the bridge and teeter. the bridge is under about 6" of water to give you a picture of how high the water is. if the water continues to go down it may be about 2 weeks till it starts to dry out. by the way, the splash i mentioned, someone was out there a few days ago and captured this pic.

I got in a couple of laps at the Spillway today and I am glad to say the trail shows no negative impact from being under water ... I didnt see any gators this time but there were a lot of snakes roaming around. All the trees have been cleared from the trail and it is nice and dry --- it should be because its been over 100 degress for days now.

the weather was absolutely perfect for the Demo and TT ... decent turn out for both events and the trail is in primo shape ... the Trek Crew did an awesome job, but they did make me return the Rumblefish II when it was over. I would have liked to race it at the TT ... thats one sweet ride

We had a good turn out considering the heat and all. Saw a few rabbits and I ran over one huge snake. The trail is really dry and sandy but overall its in great shape.

    Found

I got in a few laps today and I found someone's bike computer on the trail, if you can identify it I will make sure it gets back to you. PM me with a description.
There are trees down right before the Speed Bump and right before the AMF section and there are a few others on the trail but you can go around them til they are removed. Watch the corners they are slick and slimy since it rained.

Zoke - You said "trees" as in plural - more than one? I only saw one tree down on Sat. which was easy enough to bunny hop over with speed.

I'm assuming the trail might have gotten some rain yesterday, we had a nasty storm pass through yesterday evening. I heard Sunday the trail was dry for the most part. If it stays as hot as it is today over the next few days it ought to be primo for the weekend (other than brutal hot). C'mon cold fronts!!!

Rode yesterday evening and the trail is in nice shape. Tacky with no standing water.

Downed tree at the end of S Canada is the only real issue. Aside from that its just small debris here and there. Basic clean up type stuff.

Trials in good shape. Two down trees but the chain saw took care of that Rhys is an artist with a weed eater. He went from the trail head all the way to the end of the pipeline and back. Just covered in little pieces of cut up vegetation. Steve had a hedge trimmer on a pole and took out every face slapper from Dan's trail to the turn around and me and Brian rode the trail and cleared out all the rest of the face slappers with machetes.Little muddy on the return but ridable.

    2010 Spillway Scramble

Nomambo and friends did a great job with the event, the weather was great and it looks like everyone had a good time. It was good to see a few more women racers out there and TimT did a some unique work on the trophies. They had some really nice artwork and wood carvings that were raffled off and yep there was a lot of food for everyone. Here are a few pics

^ Cool! I never knew NOAMBO did races out at the Spillway!

I rode the spillway just over a week ago with my Girlfriend for the first time in over a year and the conditions were GREAT! So much better than Memorial Park in Houston Texas where I rode over the labor day weekend. I was kinda disappointed they took out the see-saw though...

I just got back from riding a few laps at the Spillway and all the water is gone and the trail is in awesome shape ... dry and fast and no sand
the weather has been the best riding weather in a long time ... it has been nice all weekend so I got in a ride Saturday and then caught the LSU win over TN then went to the Gretna fest and saw Dash Rip Rock and Soul Asylum and then the Saints win on Sunday and I got in a road ride ... hope this weather stays like this a long time

    1. Dash Rip Rock
    2. Soul Asylum

With a view like that I don't think I would have seen a minute of the Saints game. Hell, they could have lost and I'd don't think I would have noticed!!!

Finally made it out on Sunday myself. Trail is super fast right now.

Heading to Ridgeland at some point this weekend. What you up to, Jon?

Jon, I forwarded your pic to some Saints fans they said that pic has been around for years - so I am calling you out brah! Last time I watched a Saints game, Brooks was the QB.

When I was in Brooklyn last year, I saw Dash Rip Rock at the Trash Bar. Pretty ironic seeing them play so far from home (I had never heard of them at the time and it was funny when they said they were from New Orleans). In any case, they put on good show.

We did an unofficial vote yesterday to rebuild it. So it will be coming back sometime this winter.

Lane has been gone for a long while. There's only a few of us vets still around since the beginning. Nola seems to be a transition town for many.

I think Lane got out about the same time I did. Katrina blew us outta there.

Though I am damn impressed with what y'all have done with that trail.

So I take it your back? If so, grab yourself a single-speed and be out there for the Race of the Dead, Oct. 30th (night race). It's like the House of Shock on bikes, for real.

Unfortunately, well fortunately in some ways, I am living in Phoenix these days.

Lost the wife I had there, but I met a nice girl who went to law school with me, so I might be back in a couple years.

I dunno about that grate on the pipeline bridge. Any support underneath it? Is it flexy at all?

It’s hard to see but there is a “T” support under each side of the grating, it doesn’t fit as flush as we would have liked but still supports the grating nonetheless. Regardless this isn’t your standard grating the metal strip angled across reinforces the strength – these pieces are probably +200lbs each. We played hell getting these on location. The platform center is pretty robust and stout as well. Overall it’s much more solid and will survive longer than the previous setup.

Zoke - nice job on the pics, that really captures the smooth transitions we were going for.

Rode the trail yesterday. Excellent work!

Those grates are a lot more substantial than the pics make them look. Rock solid. Nice. Much better than the original set up.

The transitions on the rest of the bridges are awesome! May not seem like a big deal but when you ride those bridges at speed the smooth transitions make a world of difference.

Funny how it's the little things that make all the differnce sometimes.

    Keep up the good work!

Not going to be able to make it to Piney Hills. Was on the road last weekend for the McGee Lungbuster. I can't afford another road trip right now.

Kinda funny because at the start of the season Piney Hills was my main focus. Was looking forward to it so much. But I stumbled upon the SCRCS series and decided to hit some rounds. Lungbuster was the last round of the SCRSC series and I wanted to finish it out since I was in the points.

Next year for sure though. Eric said Piney Hills is supposed to be part of the LA series.

Been riding it every sat and sun mornin lately the past couple weeks. Its been pretty dry lately but this morning, it wasnt as dry which was perfect since it got rid of some of the sand in the turns and made it a little more stable to rde fast. Its nice to see the additions and improvements on the trail. Hopefully if the teeter gets back up it wont get basically vandalized like it was before. Probably be back out there tomorrow morning as well.

Looks like its time to ride Bethel or Brookhaven because the horses have destroyed the Spillway trail again. I wonder what the nomambo guys ever did with all the "no horses" signs I bought for them, anyway the trail is full of holes and horse*****. ride at your own risk.

Yes we are discussing options. I have an idea that might work and have permission from Eric to use club funds to build a "gate" at the FF connection. Stay tuned as I'm busy with the holidays.

well stu I noticed that Tim and Ryan posted pretty much the same thing I posted but you didnt have a snide remark posted on their threads. You make me feel so special, but I lose track of whether you are in the club or out of the club at any given moment, can you post your in/out schedule so I know what your status is at any given time.

    from Tim
"The Spillway MTB trail (New Orleans LA) has been invaded by horses. Totally torn up. Years of work ruined."

How do you keep horse riders off the trail?

    from Ryan
"This last weekend there were horses on the trail and they did enough damage to keep us busy for at leaset two days fixing holes and such."

    Horse proofing

    you can Thank me later

Yo mo0se, they claim I am as sneaky as they come, all in good fun.

My trip to Arkansas will not be in the time frame (presently) as I invisioned since we just got back from Philly and there is not much time before school kicks off again. I am hoping to make a weekend trip up to Clark Creek, MS & The Beast trail in St. Fran in 2 weeks, that's the most I can fit in for now. I assume the winter there has been interesting anyhow...?

There may be a chance in Spring or it will have to wait until Summer time. It's a long haul to get up there and I need a good 4 days by my estimates. Much easier if I had a buddy to tag along with me as well. In the meantime, keep in touch and I promise we'll hook up eventually.

All the best & Happy New Year,

    Stu

way OT for this thread, but I will say that looks better than anything they have at the spillway but I never understood why anyone would spend the time and money to build skinnies where they are not needed and there is perfectly good trail to ride

Hey Zoke, thanks! I believe it is you that has asked, why should you pay membership dues when you can ride a trail for free... well you have gotten your money's worth out of it...

What we do have at our trail, came from the hard work and hours of time and let's not forget the funding of these projects... all from Members stepping up and donating

2011 is here and at next weeks club meeting we will discuss trail improvements and structures that can be added to increase the fun and use of our trail..

    Hope to see you there!!

vudu I will be at the meeting and yes we need to discuss the "improvements" because as it is right now you have too many people just making changes at will to the trail with no discussion or planning

"all from Members stepping up and donating" ... thats exactly how I pay my dues

Very nice! Did you help build them? I know a perfect place at the Spillway these can be used. And you are right, "more options" is what it's all about, that's pretty much been the model at the Spillway since we are primarily flat. In many ways I wish we still had the teeter-totter it was certainly our lil niche of the south. Regardless, we have a few new fresh ideas in the queue to work on this winter.

I helped dismantle the old ones.. and a contractor (Progressive trail design) rebuilt them.
Awesome work.. treated hardwood.. should last a long time. The pics are from my mobile so they suck! But there are several of those on the trails at Slaughter Pen, and one nice one that has a nice drop off the end. Good stuff for sure!

yeah I agree with the options thing ... the xc guys (Ratboy and some others) have cut a new section of trail but the really big news out there is the 12' gap jump the dj guy is building ... its amazing what one guy with a shovel can do ... and there is a lot of building material stacked up at the qtip ... maybe they will build some big log overs to go with the rock garden thats going in by the the old teeter totter ... just throwing some options out there
