I was there this AM and there is some damage on the trails from the rain this week. The two lakes are connected near Gunrange again too. The trails are dry, however with some trees down on some. This PM they were removed so all should be good to go for tomorrow. Again bring BUG SPRAY!!

... and if we just ... Trail build day coming up!

This coming Sunday Oct 7, we will start some much needed projects and finish the ones we started last time. We need peeps with some hammer skills to finish resurfacing most of the wood features and I believe we MAY be taking down the wall on Outback Extension, as it will be rebuilt in a more flowing clamshell style berm. Also many trails need serious trimming with all the rain we have had. We have another new trimmer and pole chainsaw too as well as a power roofing nail-gun.
I want to add roofing shingles on top of High Point in Alligator, the left turn berm/bridge in Bermuda, the bridge in Warm-up and the berm in Fred's Folly in Gunrange for starters. If we have enough time, material and PEOPLE, there are a few more wood features that can use the non skid....
Please meet up at 8:30 at the main gate...

It was cool to see the kids riding around the trails today. They ranged from 2 years old to 99..
    Great times!!

Tomorrow we will do work on the trails so please keep in mind we can use your help and that we may close a trail or two we are working on......

Thanks to all who helped out today. We ended up filling in some nasty holes on Gunrange, Ted's trail, Outback and dug out Big Gulp in Aligator. The missing log has been replaced and a berm built on top of the hill as you exit.
Please stay off the closed sections as the rain will keep the repairs from hardening properly and I for one don't want to redo them again...

We are currently doing MAJOR work at Markham Park and tomorrow we will try to revamp Armadillo trail. We hope to get a few people out to help. We finished rebuilding the pump-track today and it is CLOSED till Monday. If you have a few hours to lend a hand, it will be greatly appreciated. Even if you can't lift heavy stuff some much needed cut-back of the vegetation is needed in a bad way. The majority of the heavy lifting work will be dome with the Muck-truck and the bulldozer we have BTW...
Lend a hand if you can, even picking up trash is of value!!!!

FYI...All trails except Rte 66 and Outback Extension are OPEN and in great shape. The wider bridge past Pipeline has a few busted boards so be careful there....
Armadillo project went well and it is open but needs a few tweaks.

Had a good ride this AM and Armadillo is sweat! We tweaked the trail a bit and traffic has to fix the rest.... So keep riding!!
It appears some joggers went through the wood on the bridge after pipeline and it will need fixing, so be careful in there!!

Yea, those broken boards are going to hurt someone if they arent careful.

Are you sure joggers did that? It seems to be in the landing zone of the small step along that bridge.

We had several peeps running around in there and they were tossed out. There are too many busted planks for it to be bikes..Believe it or not but you'd be surprised when you walk some of the bridges.. The wood is very soft in spots and riding is a smoother faster motion than peeps running around on them. I helped resurface Pipeline and we walked on it and broke a few boards too. They were replaced of course. I'll close that part of the trail tomorrow till we fix the issue. I'll get in touch with the person in charge.

and someone has been moving the route 66 blockade... During one of my first laps I come to the entrance and say to myself "awesome! its open"... it wasnt very far down the trail I had to kiss my stem and had a stick in my back which made a hole in my brand new jersey. I quickly turned around and walked myself out. People need to stop moving those blockades when the trail is closed..

Tell me about it. It tickes me off to no end, that some morons think the trails revolve around them while NEVER EVER volunteering one minute to help out with anything..
My buddy David closed that entrance this AM btw.

RTE 66 is CLOSED and will remain so for the duration, as the mud is too deep even for a cleaning crew to attempt cutting back the brush, let alone riding in there.
For the latest info just go on FB page. I try to keep up with the Park here but FB is the best for the latest info. Sorry about your jersey as that would piss me off too...

Hopefully with some of the money raised from the 12 hour race coming up they can buy some steel cable and maybe secure that gate in place so its not so easily moved. Or maybe post up on the FB page and someone can donate a chain.

There is money but it is better spent on building materials... But no matter what is done, there will always be some moron doing something dumb.
We now resort to dropping trees on the closed trails we work on, so we can work without being run over. After all, it is very tough to miss the 10 ton diesel dozer going around...

I was riding there yesterday and had a bunch of fun. Im new to this stuff but am quickly getting more and more into it. I tested out the strava app and am starting to log my ride. Went on the armadillo trail and the warm up loop for the most part. Does anyone else use this app and do i have to ride all the trails to actually see them? Bike Ride Profile | 3miles near Sunrise | Times and Records | Strava

In any event, im having a ton of fun. I might come buy one sunday to volunteer, however i do not know ANYONE.

Glad you're having fun! I didn't know anyone either but after a few times of working there the crew got to know me and we all get alone quite well.

    Too funny!

BTW the boards on the bridge after Pipeline have been fixed this AM. We also filled in a few spots on the trails that are in the race this WeekEnd..
Not too much will change, but please keep to the race course as set out. We will start tomorrow AM with the changes..... Some trails or parts thereof will be reversed...

Is the race course that's set up high and dry? How much rain are you guys expecting in the next two days? We're heading down from NE fla tomorrow and I'd hate to drive five hours for a rain out.

We will get a lot of rain (anyones guess on how much) but the trails should be fine for race day. They dry out pretty good and with some luck, they will be just right for the race. I am helping out setting up the course tomorrow and most of the course is high and, I hope, dry... There will be puddles in between the various trails but it is MTBing...
The worst weather is the next 24 hrs and clearing on Saturday...

Tomorrow will be my first race and I'm just wondering about events and other things. My race is scheduled around 11:30 and so I was thinking I should plan to get there at about 10:30 or 10 so I could see some of the other races start to see how that works. I'm assuming that there is going to be an area to check in to and get race numbers so I should allow time for that. I'm also allowing time for a little warm-up. Just how exactly will the check in process work and the race start work? Will they call you to the line or are you expected to be there? I also just saw on the website a rider's meeting at 9:15. Will I have to be there at 9:15? Is there anything else that goes on after the race?

How did you racer's do today?? Post up please..
I was part of the patrol crew but in my 'undercover' yellow jersey..
Very few issues except with some non-racing peeps trying to get on the trails during the race..
I don't know why some folks don't comprehend the word CLOSED....Anyway I think all went very well from what I have seen.

I though I saw you out there Oscar! Today was my first race and I came in 10th out of 14th. not bad considering I had a flat and ran the last mile of the course. I had lots of fun today, learned lots about racing, and came out with the same amount of bones that I went in with. That's always a plus!

The only issue which I found annoying was all the vehicle traffic which kept coming past the goneriding trailer... vehicles that just seemed to be driving by sight seeing, not realizing the road was closed.. it was gridlock at times.. kinda wish they had a big ROAD CLOSED sign, so people would turn around way earlier

The trails were in great shape and those tight turns leading to the finish made for some good racing.

Glad you guys did well. The traffic was out of our control even though we had the road blocked with a truck and a van. People are just down here...We had issues with keeping peeps out of the trails during the race. Fortunately we caught all of them in time...

Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead! Rte 66 help needed this sunday!!

This coming weekend on Sunday @ 8:30 is Trail-build day and if anyone is interested in getting RTE 66 opened up, they need to come out and help cut the trail out. 6 Months of closure has made the trail totally inaccessible and the scrub and trees are too much for the usual 5 peeps that show up. The trail will remain closed for even longer, if not enough help is forthcoming... YOUR CHOICE!!!

I am working this weekend and won't be there to help, but if you like to ride that trail again than all help is welcome. If enough peeps show up they want to repair Upback trail that was destroyed by Isaac and open that too if possible. That trail is the blocked off one on the left as you start in Outback. The big project of Outback extension will be tackled in December.

That first climb in Outback is called Upback..and if enough peeps show up it could get fixed and reopened this Sunday. 66 is 3/4 mile or so?? Forgot it as it has been so long anyone could ride it.

... and if we just ...

We are currently repairing Upback and if all goes well we should be done tomorrow PM. So far we have dumped 20 loads with the Muck-Truck and we have more to do. We have 23.5 Tons of material to get up the hill.
Also added in Armadillo is an extra berm just past the very big one...It should be good to go tomorrow AM.
Outback Extension is on the list as we have 75 Tons of material staged on the double track between the lake and the trail..
Some extra help would be appreciated as it is just the two of us working on these projects....

    Good job!

UpBack is finished and should open on Wednesday. The Soil-Tac has to dry out and we have a bit of rain delaying that process. We dumped 25 tons of fill in there and when you ride it, you will see why....
The climb in will be steeper than before, but smoother and should keep you from spinning the rear tire.. The decent is crazy fast with a surprise in the middle for those who like to get big air.
The exit is completely bermed all the way into the next trail....
There will be a STOP sign installed on the bypass, as peeps will have the right-of-way coming out of UpBack. The exit speed will be too big to slow down... My advice is to ride it once slow to re-learn the trail before blasting off..

We started the repair on Outback Extension and dropped 50 Tons of fill on the old exit ramp where the holes used to be. The dozer almost went over the side in the process...
The trail will have a major re-route whereby part of the wooden wall will be re-used too. This redo will take longer as it is the biggest project to date. OBX will also be the highest point in Markham!
For pics see the Markham Park Mountain Bikers page on FB...

    Cool!!!

    UpBack is OPEN!!
It is fast so please ride with care as lines have changed. We also still need to install a STOP sign on the bypass as riders coming out of UpBack will have the right-of-way. Make your presence known when flying out of UpBack...!!!

Yes that is OBX ..It too is under re-construction. The wall is being torn down this week and the nasty drop at the exit has been filled in completely as it will be re-routed... It will be awesome once done. Don't want to give away the "secret" yet... Just stay tuned or lend a hand on the first Sunday every month for trail-work....

Edit: We started to tear down that wall today and are 70% done in just a few hours..

    Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead!

For all the peeps riding Markham, the next trail maintenance day is going to be big as we are trying to finish the Outback Extension trail, repair the drop on Crime-scene a fix the climb on Twisted trail aka Ted's (the one with the steel cables in the beginning) and repair the exit of Rockgarden.

We will need about 15 people with strong backs to help with those projects. Those with less strong backs can still come out and help pick up all the garbage on the trails or do some much needed trimming of the vegetation unless of course you like being slapped in the face by branches...
This week when the mood strikes me, I will make an effort to empty out all the garbage cans in the park. However, I can't run around to pick up all the tubes and bottles so graciously dropped off by our fellow riders all over the place.

If you like what you see as far as the trails are concerned, think about lending a hand and help out the 2-3 people that have done almost all of the work lately. Sooner or later we will stop doing this as we can't carry the 20.000+ registered riders who somehow never have time to spare an hour or two a month to help out.

You'll like what we have done so far.

The only thing we didn't get done was Outback Extension as Ted's trail took 8 volunteers all day to repair. We moved at least 60 Tons of fill into that trail. Gone are the steel cables at the entrance and we built 4 new berms in there too and got rid of the rocks on the top by filling it all in. The climbs are still steep but the rewards going downhill are awesome.

We had a lot of people come out and help so we did 4 trails today and they are all done.
Ted's, Iguana, Rockgarden and an outside the park trail for the 12 hour race in 2 weeks.
Plenty of space for those who like to ride Markham in the dark BTW!!

Cool.. You're more than welcome to join in the fun .
I started riding Markham about 3 years ago to get back in shape and I have heard how the park was way back when. A lot has changed as lately we are really improving the trails to make them safer and fun. We still get people carted out by ambulance but way less so than in the past.

Yesterday, we were working on several trails simultaneously as we had a lot of people show up , which was greatly appreciated by the regular crew!!

Markham also has a FB page for more current info and updates btw...

Just a reminder that Markham will be CLOSED on Sunday due to the annual Toy-Run. There will be about 30.000 motorcycles dropping of toys and donating money for a great cause.

Upback is freaking awesome!!! It's easily my favorite section now. I noticed that after the jump but before the berms there's a spot where the trees are thin enough to cut back through onto the climb. It would be nice if you left that little bit of a clearing there. I was using it to walk back up to the top so I could session the jump a few times

Glad you like that part. It is my favorite part of that trail even if I say so myself.. We try to install several jumps/hucks like that all over the trails if possible. There is one like that in Armadillo too, just after the big drop and before the berm that turns you left. They are easy to build and people can ride and roll over them or, with some speed, get air.

Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead! Ted's trail is Closed..

Ted's, aka Twisted trail, will be CLOSED till wednesday. We just built a new berm and the Soil-Tac needs to dry out. The bypass and second climb are open. Just PLEASE stay out of the closed part so the berm and trail can dry out. The Soil-tac will not com off your bike or your clothes either...Plenty of fools found out the hard way...

Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead! Some FYI's

First; Ted's trail is OPEN and it is a sweet ride up and down so watch your speeds.

Second; Outback Extension is almost done after 200+ man-hours and 150 tons of fill. It is still CLOSED however and won't open until sometime next week, we hope. Please stay out off this trail as it is dangerous to ride an incomplete trail.
Also the trail will become a DOUBLE RED DIAMOND trail because the high speeds coming down the drop, which has 2 places to catch air. If you think a smooth trail in Markham will be easy, than this one will surprise everyone for sure...

Last and not least, Saturday the 15th, Markham will be CLOSED because of the 12 hour race.
If you are interested to ride the race course you can do so on Friday ONLY, OR enter the race itself. NO race-day registration!!!! Check out this site..

I'm helping setting it all up tomorrow and think it is similar to the CC race but flatter since we like to see peeps do all 12 hours. I know tomorrow for sure as we may have to re-reroute a few parts because of the rain... I'll post it up here..

Race course has been laid out! Please follow the arrows and don't ride through any tape!!
The course is 7.5 miles long and has a few mild climbs such as Ted's trail and Upback.
It is fairly mild on the count that you will ride it either 6 or 12 hours... Good luck and above all have fun!!!

    Good job!

The 12 hour race at Markham was a great success! We had about 150 riders, food vendors, a movie and a lot of fun! The course was great and we only had a few minor mishaps..
Biggest problem was to keep the usual idiots out of the trails...

I saw the pics on the FB page. It looked like it was a blast. I wanted to check it out but had to be out of town for the weekend. I did a few races there when I used to ride and they were always a blast but I don't think they were quite as organized and attend as it appears yesterdays race was. I hope to be out there for my first time in many years next weekend. I am looking forward to seeing the new Markham. Thanks for the hard work you guys have put in. I hope to be able to help out soon.

The event was huge amounts of fun albeit tiring for the crew. I got there at 5 AM with a friend of mine and the rest of the crew were not far behind.. With each race we do, the club gets better at doing things. This time we had to really be on the ball as it was the first night time ride allowed by the county @ Markham.. All went well and so there will be another 12 hour next year.
Hope to see you on the trail!!

Awesome! I haven't been able to make the trek down there in a month or two but I'm hoping to go a couple times over winter break. I'd love to ride all the changes that were made that have been talked about.

Got in my first ride this morning on the new bike. I spent 45 minutes checking out mostly blue trails and the occasional black, by accident and had a blast. Only one fall which draw a little blood, remindiing me of when I used to come home from riding when my kids were little and they would ask mom why dad liked biking when he always came home with bloody shins. Not a bad ride considering its been at least ten years since I've been out there. I hope to make it out tomorrow. Congrats to you guys for putting these trails together!

Oh. My. Gosh. Outback Extension is awesome! Rode Markham for the first time since early November and really appreciated the changes and work done to not just outback, but the entire trail system. Great work, especially on Outback. that little drop there is now my favorite part in the entire trail system!

    Thanks!!

If all you riders really like what we have done, please lend a hand for what we are about to do...
There are some MAJOR changes planned that will add a lot of yardage to the trails. There are a few re-routes planned and if we get a lot of help, this will happen sooner rather than later.
We had a planning session yesterday and IF we get the volunteers to come out on the next trail build day, we could get very far with these plans. Don't forget that Markham is YOUR park as well....
First Sunday of each month is when we do most of the work,,,

Yes, Sunday the 6th is TM day.

We start at 8:30 AM. Just show up at the trail gate with work gloves, and old work clothes. I recommend a camelback or something like that for whatever you want to drink. Some snacks are a good thing too.
Depending on how many people show up we may do anything from garbage pick up from the trails, I.E Gu packets, tubes, bike parts etc, to trimming vegetation in several trails that need it the most..
    Hope to see you there...

How long do you normally work ?
I have never ridden there, so might be a good way for me to check it out afterwards.

That depends on how much we need to get done and how fast that happens but generally around 4 to 6 hours, although some of us stay until the job is done....
Even if you put an hour or 2,3 in, that is fine too and much appreciated, as it isn't a chain-gang we're running here,,
    Although some days I wish....
