I have been off the bike for a little while now but I am moving out to FL and wondering what the riding is like. Even though I lived there for a short time I didn't have a bike.
Any suggestions on other more focused Forums? Riding buddies, Shops, and Trails? I will be in the Orlando area
I replied to the yesterday but for some reason it did not post. huh
Welcome!
"UCF area rides" on facebook does a lot and this forum is a good place to go. Ocala Mountain Bike Association web site is also good. Your more than welcome to ride with the little group I ride with. PM me and let me know, we are out of the Orlando/ east Coast area.
Kyles Bike Shop near downtown Orlando on Primrose is a cool LBS with a good local vibe. They organize group urban rides on Tues nights and roadie rides on Thurs nights. Good people.
There are a lot of good trails in cntrl Fl, Santos, Alafia, Balm Boyette, Carter rd, to name a few. All of which are within 1-1.5 hours drive... Close to Orlando you have a couple options. (Little Big Econ aka Snowhill, or Soldiers Creek in Winter Springs) Orlando will also soon have a public bike park which has a short loop of trail and a pump track but isn't open just yet. Welcome.
Spruce creek is a nice trail too. Davids world cycle is good for bikes. The casselberry Davids has good mechanics who ride a good bit of the trails in the area.
I'm in the Tampa area and just started riding a week ago. Been going to the Flatwoods Park on Bruce B Downs Blvd.. its fun. Going to Santos this weekend, heard great things about it. Let you know how it is.
Santos was incredible. I went with a group that have been riding for a while, they decided to take me on the "experienced" trails.. some parts, not gonna lie, I was a bit freaked out. Some of the descents were really steep and very rocky.. but I couldn't look like a chicken so I went for it... the best ride I have ever had..
My bike is packed up and ready to ship out, now just for me to get on my way. Are there any maps of trails and does anyone do morning rides? What are the snakes/animals like in the area? Here in SoCal we have a large rattlesnake population and I hate em!
Snakes are not bad but you do see them from time to time. In Florida during the summer morning rides are really the only time to ride or at night haha, it gets hot.
Santos is where its at place has everything I'll be there sunday at the Vortex Pit on a blue Specialized SX. If you go there make sure you park at the vortex entrance just down the road from the santos entrance makes life way easier because the better trails and freedride stuff is right there.
I live in Lakeland, which is 30-40 miles west of Orlando. I generally ride Loyce Harpe Park in Mulberry. I also ride Alafia and Boyette and Santos occasionally. The trails in central Florida may surprise you. Check out Singletracks.com or ProEdgeBiker.com for pictures and videos.
