    Any Gainesville, FL group rides?

My wife and I are relatively new to mountain biking. We've found San Felasco and love it.

Our main hang out friends just got pregnant, we need new friends

Not that I know of, but it would be nice. Santos in Ocala has a group ride that I believe is organized by one of the Ocala bike shops. I've seen groups at Felasco, but have no idea who organizes the ride.

If you join the Gainesville Cycling Club you get access to their calendar which includes group rides, but mostly road. You'll also get discounts to almost ALL of the area bike shops.

The easiest way I've seen to do a group ride is to tag along with a group that appears to have the same equipment you do. Just about everyone out there is friendly, eager to make the experience a little more fun.

Right now though, remember to bring plenty of water and a snack or two plus plenty of bug spray so you are not "that guy" on the trail who holds back the group from enjoying their time.

Thanks for the replies guys, good info. Very cool about the club's discounts.. may have to pick up another road bike. Wife is afraid to get on the road, but I know if she did- she would tear my legs off.

We watched a few Rock trail youtube clips last night, looks... not as fun as San Felasco, judging only by videos. But i'm sure we will check it out eventually.

Also, couldnt find the discount % on the Gville cycle club site, anyone know?

    Thanks 9375!

I'm taking today off from the bike. I work 12 hour shifts and always feel too beat up after 3 of em.
Wife is doing her 1st Millhopper road this morning. She's always been afraid to ride on the road- told her it was worth it there, and that there are so many cyclists, that it keeps drivers more alert.

I was a roadie for years and after many close calls with cars, decided to switch to trail riding and love it. Compared to trails, the road is boring.

Has she tried Hawthorne rails to trail between G'ville and Hawthorne? If you ride the entire length, it's 30 miles. A friend of mine who rides it often, saw a good size alligator resting next to the trail once. I work across 441 from Felasco, so I ride every Tuesday and Thursday after work (weather permitting), then once on the weekends, or, sometimes head down to Santos in Ocala.

You are welcome to join me anytime. The after work ride starts between 4:30 and 5:00 and I ride from 10 to 15 miles. If I'm joined by a work colleague, then we avg 8 to 9 miles. He lives in Ocala and his riding time is limited. Like 9375, the weekend rides start around 9:00am and I'll ride 15 to 20 miles.

    haha,
I rode road for a while, but then I got scared of ED
I agree that trails are pretty darn exciting, but whirling in the big ring on the road is something ill remember.

So she loved it, which is very good for me haha. But then near the end of her ride some guy with a boat trailer swerved twds her, so she got nervous and turned around.

She will prob switch to riding Sundays there, there might be less traffic and more cyclist.
We joined the GCC, so we may ride with one of their early morning slower paced road groups, since we dont have road bikes.

Heading out to San Felasco in the AM. Should be hitting the trails around 9:30 if anyone wants to tag along. I plan on riding for 4 to 5 hours.

There were several group mtb rides through the in-town Gainesville trails (there are very many) when I [sadly] left about a year ago. These rides are the best way to learn the local trails; many are posted online, but many aren't, and some you don't want to go down by yourself due to hoboes, hood, gators, and the like. The Wednesday evening ride from Mr. Goodbike (NW 13th St. and NW 5th Ave) was very popular, with many newcomers each week; very laidback, no-drop ride. I think it left at 6:30 PM, lasts till 8:30-9. There was a Monday evening ride from Supercool and a Friday evening ride from Bikes and More, but these would be off and on depending on the time of year and # of people who showed up. You'll want a spotlight for these rides, it is worth it. Check with the shops to see if they're is still going on.

Was just there yesterday. Got 40 miles in. The rain has really beaten the trails up on some parts. I have never seen them that bad.

    Wow, 40 miles is impressive.

It was fun. Checked out Vortex bc of all I hear about it- but it was wet, and above my skill and fitness level

A nice couple helped up find the fun intermediate trails. Saw a guy cruising by ppl smoking a black and mild, think he was on a Giant. Saw a guy in mid 50s (?) on a Kona Unit, and I think he was smoking a pipe in the parking lot. It was a cool scene.

If you go report back on how it is. FYI joining the CSO is worth it for the free entrance passes you get. The family membership easily pays for itself.

I would actually prob not go. I ride 3 to 4 hours straight while I'm there and I usually end up with a 12 to 13 mph average. My wife may go and if she does I will def report back.
