No love for Trek yet?

I'm surprised to not see any Trek talk yet... Here's a picture of my old Trek frame. This is a 1st generation rear end with a 2002 front end. My seat tube cracked and Trek sent me a new front triangle... I put it back together and promptly sold it on the MTBR classifieds.

With the current popularity of the Fuel, I take it Trek has sorted out the seat tube welds???

Lovin' my Trek, here.... '01 Fuel 90, basically stock other than wear and tear upgrades, barends....no frame breakage.....yet ...<fingers and toes crossed>
And all stickers from frame/fork are gone - nice matte black "stealth" Fuel...
If you have the disc brake version:
Hopefully you also gave the "stealth" treatment to those horribly over-stickered Rolf wheels! That was the first thing I did to mine when I got it home... The Rolfs are still going strong on my alu HT xc bike. I've been REALLY surprised at their durability.

LOL...well, no, I don't have the disc wheels, but, yeah, I stripped the "horribly over-stickered" Rolfs of their stickers....mine are the lowly Satellites (sp??), but, as well, they're still going strong - absolutely NO problems (just slightly flexy if I turn very hard and fast on a grippy surface - rim bumps against the vee-brake pad and goes "ping"...took me a lil while to figure out just what the heck that sound was...now that I know, no biggie :)

Here are my Treks

I've got two of em, one for off road and one for on. I bought the fuel frame off the classifieds here and have build it up piece by piece whenever I've had the money. It's stocked pretty well with Fox, Easton, Race Face, Thomson, Sram, and some other good stuff. I've almost completely stripped the bike of shimano crap, it's quite nice. I just like shimano cassettes more than Srams. As for the roadie, it's a pretty much stock 2200. I bought it off ebay and put a new saddle and bar tape on it and added a saddle bag. Trek makes some great bikes. Never any trouble with either of mine.

I'll try to load up some pictures, but I've never done multiples, and this new format will probably confuse me, but here goes it.

I've got a 2001 Fuel 90 with the disc brakes and have been tremendously happy with it. I've had a bit of problems with brake noise and vibration from the back, but the shop has been able to keep the brake adjusted to avoid it most of the time.

Still, I'm going to dump at least the rear disc to go with rim brakes just so it doesn't have to keep getting it adjusted (I know there's a fix I could get, but I have a pair of Mavic Crosslinks from my old hardtail that I want to use on the Fuel).
Since I got the Fuel, I haven't even ridden the hardtail off road. The Fuel just fits better and is more fun to ride.

all you need to do is edit your post pasting the properties of the image links one at a time using the insert pic icon. If only posting one pic the usual simple method works.

Brakes have about 75 miles on them now and I have no squeling sounds when i use them. I do get a little chirping sound every now and then out of the back when riding a certian way but not when I apply the brakes. I think the sound is coming from the rotor touching the pads when the rear end flexs a bit to the side. It doesn't always do it and really isn't loud so it's not a big deal to me. It's no wear near some of the bikes I hear on the trail when they hit thier brakes, the chirp is like a little bird sound.

Do you have any issues with squealing or vibrating with the discs? The '01 Fuels were notorious for problems with noise and vibration from the rear. I haven't had many problems with it -- as long as I take the bike into the shop periodically to get them adjusted.

I'll throw mine up...

As long as the pics load up that is. Here is my 00 trek 8500. I bought the frame off of here, and added some parts. Just a few weeks ago, I had the frame anodized, and rebuilt everything. The frame may be SLR, but I took care of that by throwing on some rhynolites, and BFRs. Manitou x-vert up front, seems to work fine for me, xt drivetrain. various ritchey components in the cockpit. So far, no problems at all with the frame or components. Let me know how you like the anodizing!

The pics are low resolution, I guess I need to learn how to save them larger than 78mb, but not larger than 200mb.

Spaz: Isn't there a lifetime warranty on the frame? Maybe you can get Trek to spot you a new one.
Cool anodizing. . . . Where did you get it done? My next bike will have custom paint: I just don't know if it'll be powder coat or anodized.

I don't need to get my frame replaced. It's running just fine as is. Periodic maintenance from the shop, a good cleaning here and there, and I haven't had any problems.

I didn't know Trek was notorious for bad seat tube welds?

I bought my Trek 8500 hardtail back in 1998 and rode the crap out of it, that thing took so much abuse and crashes and just kept on going with little more than some wheel truing.

I finally sold it for a nice price on mtbr.com and got my 2003 Fuel90. I was so tired of watching my dual suspension friends blasting up rocky hills seated while I was getting tossed all over the place.

I was going to keep the 8500 as a gym/grocery getter bike, but it had the "rapid rise" derailleur and the opposite direction shifting was seriously screwing with my head everytime I headed out on the technical trails in my Fuel90. It's been six months now and I still shift the wrong direction occasionally.

I had a look at the Fuel 90 reviews on mtbreview.com recently, and from what I can tell, it was the earlier model-year frames, and only a small number.

My 2001 Fuel 90 Disc is still going strong! The matte black finish still hasn't scratched or marked, even after quite a few stacks! I've only just replaced a few bits and pieces after over 3 years of riding.

Cheers,
tt

1700 miles recorded on my 2003 fuel 90. I had a bad rear triangle, that got replaced no questions asked. Other then that, there is probably more like 2500 on this thing right now and it is going great. 2003 seat tube cracking seemed to come on earlier models, and I also noticed on heavier riders. A good majority of the riders I saw cracked or snapped tubes were heavy weight or abusive riders who didn't understand what a cross country bike is. So, you shouldn't have any problems.
