I agree that the reputation system is pointless. People should judge the poster by what he says, and not by what others say about him.

I think it's awesome the negative rep stays even after posts are deleted, like flowers in a scrap book .

I'll add my vote to dumping this system.
I've been here long enough to know who to trust and avoid.

They will never remove the rep system, no matter how stupid and meaningless it has proven to be.

We are currently looking at removing the "anonymous" part of the rep function.
Rep is NOT anonymous on RoadBikeReview forums and it seems to work good over there.

    Stay tuned.

Yes, please... If you can somehow make it retroactive (pull back the curtain on all rep given) that would be fantastic!

Can't wait and 100% make it retroactive so all those pussies who were hiding behind it and giving out NEG rep because they did not agree with your opinion or it differed from theirs can get their comeuppance.

ha ha haa, wow. there would be paybacks on a massive scale. and then giving 99 more so they could payback again. this might bring the whole rep system to a server-killing armageddon!

actually, the issue of it being retro-active or not is a concern.

at this point, I'm not sure if it is, and we were worried about it being retroactive....

I have no issue with people neg repping me, sometimes I'm up too late or early and 1/2 asleep and post crap, sometimes I don't read the thread/post accurately and sometimes I'm just in a plain bad mood and deserve it, but a lot of the NEG rep I've gotten has had stupid comments and are to do with my opinion, which IMHO the rep system is not about. I've actually PMd people who have given NEG rep and signed it when I deserved it and said as much, but nameless people trying to be tough pisses me off to no end.

Anonymous rep enables people to make rash choices without any consequences. I'd bet the vast majority of -rep handed out is done as a trolling tactic in an attempt to cause arguments and disruption of threads.

If you remove the anonymity, there is no doubt there will be consequences for some of those past choices. But, I wager that future choices (giving hateful -rep, for example) will be more thought out.

A dust-up will happen. No worse than when the rep system was implemented, though. Things will eventually settle back down and the system will be a better one than it is today...

please do it, dont care if its retro or not. Not signing your name is weak. I've noticed our local paper mandate hooks into a commenter's FB account, and the hateful slop has largely vanished.

Yup and first a$$ I'm going to ding if it's retroactive is the clown who left neg rep with this comment......."Random retoractive negative reputation." Seriously, just like you can report bad/annoying posts you should be able to report this sort of shite. If the other person before them had remembered to sign their POS rep they gave me my investigation to find this idiot would be rolling along smoothly.

This attitude is exactly why I would avoid making it retroactive.

Either way though, end the anonymous neg rep.

I fail to see any problems or advantages to any particular way of doing things. If anything, this whole rep system is kind of silly.

I think we can all agree with that. but then again this whole site is based on being a bit silly. We're chatting online about riding bikes in the dirt. Can't take it too much to heart.

Anonymous rep is great. I signed some negative rep and I got a lot of harassment over it. Pros and cons.

I don't. That is why a highly personalized, signed rep system is a bit out of place. I do not like it on silverfish and roadbike review - people are bickering too much.
