Is there some way that legit users can get around this? 20 posts/day limit for active users is awfully restrictive. With all the new measures the terrorists are winning.

There must be better ways to fight the persistent SPAM. Maybe somebody from the front office can go to an internet security seminar and pick up some tips, ideas and methods?

Maybe bring on "junior moderators" who's sole job is to respond to and delete SPAM?

Make a requirement of 25 legitimate posts before starting a thread or mod approval for first 5 threads this won't effects any legit members only spammers

So this limit only applies to creating new threads ?

Why not base the 'create new threads limit' on the users' reputation points. That is, those with lots of reputation points can create more threads than new joiners. As a starting point, use the formula below and tweak it later if it's still too restrictive.

    Where R = 1 reputation point ( 1 green block )

Number of new threads per day = R + 1
Number of posts per day = unlimited

A new joiner will only be able to create 2 new threads which I think is more than enough to have their noob questions answered. I currently have 5 points so I can create 6.

If a limit is also applied to general posts, then that will be the beginning of the end of this forum.

I already sent messages advising how to stop spam. Its time to hire a contractor for a days work I think

Contrary to the wording in the message, it is 20 posts in 24 hrs.

A 20 post limit isn't going to stop the spammers they will just create 5 accounts it will only hurt legit members. Something must be done with created threads. Nobody creates more than 2 or 3 thread. If they will not setup an aproval process for new member posts 5han they have to focus on started threads not post counts.I don't understand why setting up an approval process is so difficult almost every forum I have ever used has this

In addiition to filtering threads / detecting spam content and contributors, I had also suggested making the account creation more difficult. E.G

    1. Ask a few questions requiring some intelligence and in non-parseable format E.g.

    The Nth letter of the alphabet where N = 2 multiplied by ( 4 add 6 ) plus 1
What is petrified in Yellowstone National Park
What does this mou tain not have ?

    2. Delay the account creation confirmation email by 1 or 2 days. As many bots expect a quick response, adding a long delay throws a big spanner in the works.

    3. Block suspicious email domains which bots use for receiving emails

Setting post limits is completely pointless and illogical.

If the post limit is actually to limit what existing members post, then we need some more moderators. We need to distinguish 'bad contributors' from 'spam bots' and treat each accordingly.

    The new message today is:

"You have reached the maximum allowable new threads per day. For more information on this anti-spam measure, view this thread>>"

    1) As mentioned earlier, a limit on posting will kill the forums portion of MTBR. In frustration, members will simply walk away. The word will spread and soon MTBR's forum will be avoided like the plague.

    2) The phrase "new threads" is incorrect. We are talking about "new posts" here aren't we?

LOL, I even got the message while I was trying to post this post...

    You do want feedback, right?

Great responses from the mods. Yay!

None of the mods are IT savy enough. They couldn't find the "Any" key even if it hit them upside their ***. That's why they do these stupid bandaids instead of getting someone who knows what needs to be done to secure the site.

It just irritates legitimate users. Spammers are nothing more than bots, bots don't abide by the same rules.

No need to get too negative towards the folks trying to run the place.

However this approach seems to be penalizing legit users and most likely will have only a minimum effect on the spam. A 20 post/day limit just doesn't seem like an appropriate fix. There has to be better ways to approach this problem. Certainly there must be technical fixes in the software or better procedures for allowing new members to create threads.

Anyhow I'm a firm vote to not go with the current strategy!

What can be said that haven't been said already. I agree that this is not going to effect spammers but rather have a negative effect on legit users.

I vote NO on post count limit restrictions.

    Hey All,

We are working on tweaking the setting for these. As stated in another thread, we have changed the time between posts back to 60 seconds (which is what it was previously set at).

The post count per day, I am working on changing this so it only affects new users. I'll need another day or two to test this and push live.

Thanks for your patience. Post count limit should be open soon.

    Thanks greg.

Guys go easy on the mods, without them this site would be a hellish troll utopia where the spam is only interrupted by the occasional racist homophobe

    Are you sure Gregg?

I just got this message and Im pretty sure I'm not a new user.

The following errors occurred with your submission
You have reached the maximum allowable new threads per day. For more information on this anti-spam measure, view this thread>>

So it seems as though when I reach the 20 thread (post) limit it takes anywhere from 3 to 9 clicks to get the message to finally post. I hope this glitch is being addressed?

But its variable. Sometimes there is no problem, other times its 3 - 9 clicks.

Hey Guys, new idea. So, it seems this new plug-in is working but the problem with manual approval of all new registrants posts is that we get way too many new users each day to manually approve.

So, I can create a special usergroup (my first thought was to call it "Forum Junkies", but this may be off putting to some people, so I'm open to ideas on what to call it) but I would place each of you into this usergroup and you would be exempt from any post count restrictions. I would have to do this manually, so you guys would have to tell me here, who is being affected by it.

    What do you think?

Seems like the list for this group would be:
    Hawg
    Mookie
    heyyall
    DIRTJUNKIE

    Any others?

Hey Hawg, Mookie, heyyall and DIRTJUNKIE...

Go and see if you guys still have the post count restriction or if it's off.

Should be off for you guys.
