The new format is teh suck

it's been a couple weeks now and I still can't stand it.

It's simply not appealing, plus many of the the search features are all screwed up.

Agree. It's simply how the threads are stacked IMO. It looks too busy and it's too hard to find threads that catch my eye, or ones I previously visited (and recognize them by title). A smaller secondary issue is that the forum navigation is somewhat annoying in that it always starts at the "top", rather than if I want to jump from NorCal to AZ forum, which is only "one forum away" in the order of things, it always starts off at the top at Passion or whatever, so I have to scroll way down to find it.

I saw a buddy online a bit ago and clicked on the "recent posts" button or whatever it's called - just to see what's he's been up to. All it brought up were posts from 2006.

When you hit the "latest forums posts" button - results read as a stream of consciousness. As you said - it's hard to read.

I dont find the new format intuitive - and I figured it was time for people to offer up their opinions.

I hate it. Its a major reason why I have spent very little time on MTBR in the last couple of weeks.
Even just to do this reply, i hit the "Reply To Thread" button, it only takes me to the Quick Reply screen. I have to hit a second button to do an advanced reply.
The old format, it was one button to do an advanced reply, no buttons to do a quick reply.

The whole thing feels like it was designed simply to fit more advertising space. I don't mind a few ads. It pays for the site. Fine. I can deal with that. The column on the right side is considerably bigger. It gives less space to the fun part of the forum.

    The smileys suck a$$!!!

Its really annoying that screen names don't fit.

    I want my money back!

Old format: I had class. I was a contender.

New format: I could've been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am.

Since the 'upgrade' I have used MTBR substantially less, mainly because I can no longer open the forums from my computer at work (IE 8 on Windows Vista....not exactly up to date I know). I now always get a 'page read error' and only load the page header but everything else comes up blank. I have no problem accessing the rest of MTBR (home page, articles, reviews) from my work computer.

Not really seeing the benefits of the new format....

I don't like to complain because it isn't my site, but I have to admit I am having a harder time getting around the site. I would like it better if the threads were a lot wider on screen, visually it would make things a lot easier to find imo.

I think this is useful info for Francois. Sometimes complaining is good - so long as it's constructive.

I'd like to complain about your use of the word constructive. It makes me think of tall buildings and tall buildings do not belong on an MTBR forum.

(see what I mean? That would have been way funnier on the old format.)
I'm not sure how this works.

I just signed up so I don't know what the old version was like. One issue I do see is as soon as you register you get major notices saying go introduce yourself in the general section. Ok, I can live with that. Ooops. The next thing you're told is you aren't allowed to post until you have 5 posts. It doesn't explain, just says nope not allowed. Turns out you have to reply to threads at least 5 times, I guess anyway, since it does allow replies. A little confusing.

    Hi Mr. bicycles,

I concur! Besides all the issues others have brought up I'll add that on the previous version I never had any issues uploading photos once I learned the size restrictions. However, with this version I haven't been able to even display the photos I've previously uploaded or to upload any additional photos.

I'm hoping that management is still in the process of implementing this upgrade and we have better days in front of us.

    Thanks,

    Michael

I just typed up a long response with salient points, and hit the button to post, and it took me to a blank page.

It's a very frustrating change MTBR has made, and it pisses me off several times a day.

Plus, as someone has already mentioned, it makes us less funny and the more dummer.

I guess I am getting used to it since another forum that I frequent went with the same format a couple years ago. My time spent there dropped dramatically, but I am slowly going back. Maybe the same will happen here.

Not a fan of the new format. A lot harder to see the threads of interest, navigate, or look at profiles and search is a mess - latest threads and 2006 with nothing in between. Much prefer the previous version though as mentioned Tapatalk looks the same

There's a setting to embiggen the threads so they aren't so narrow. Forget what it is, but play around a bit and you should find it.

I'm not thrilled with the new changes, but don't mind 'em either. I like it better on my phone now. It's actually usable whereas before I gave up on coming to mtbr on my phone.

I was going to chime in on the "suck" side, but then I noticed I had a profile notification and clicked it and got to see all the rep and comments people left for me. Hadn't seen that before, freaking hilarious!

It's easy to complain as users but the amount of work that goes into behind the scenes most will never know. Progress requires updating for software patches and glitches, no always perfect, to enhance features that make the site easier to maintain and additional revenue to keep the site free are all necessary. I haven't had any issues navigating around the new layout...honestly even being here for sometime I actually prefer the new format..... ok flame on...

Most of the changes haven't really bothered me as I adapt to visual changes pretty quickly. But having just used the image uploader in a reply to a thread, I have to say that it is one of the worst interfaces ever. It's too confusing, and requires too many redundant clicks. I think the main gripe for me is that the new format is not as user friendly. It's okay just browsing, searching, and reading, but adding content is more trouble than it's worth.

vBulletin seems to be pretty clunky which probably presents some challenges, but I imagine the real challenge has been in finding room for the sheer amount of ads , now that takes effort...

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback. We are here and listening. To be perfectly honest, there are some things we hoped would be better, but haven't quite panned out. Chief among these is the spam problem. We are looking at options to fix this.

The search function is getting re-indexed (again) and should be done soon. However, Francis and I noticed the order that the search results gets returned is bad. It use to be chronological, now it's by forum. We will try and change this back.

Probably the single biggest reason we upgraded is because the old 3.8.7 version we were using was no longer supported and had some pretty huge safety holes that made us vulnerable to hackers (which has happened before, some of you may remember).

And definitely, for those of you who are feeling "cramped", feel free to use the "wide" option that is selectable from the dropdown in the lower left corner.

Thanks for your patience. We are not done dialing this in.

Thansk Gregg. Glad you took this as constructive feedback - as it was definitely meant to be.

The search thing is sort of two-fold for me. Obviously the search results have been off lately - but also the format of the results is hard to read.

it's helpful to keep the username, thread title and forum name in clear columns - not bleeding together.

    just my $.02.

The "wide" setting is messed up on my laptop, which is all I have. It is 15" which is really 12" by 7.5", but it would have to be 20 x 7.5 to use "wide", or I have to scroll side to side. There has to be another setting. I use six other forums that are VBulletin that do not have this problem.

    Hey jrm,

If you want to reply to the thread as a whole, you can do it by just typing into the quick reply box or clicking on the button (either at the top or the bottom of the thread) that says "+Reply to Thread".

If you want to reply to a previous post, you can click on either the "Reply" or "Reply with Quote" buttons that are located below and to the right of that specific post.

    Does that clarify it?

With google, I forgot mtbr had a search function.

Google > mtbr, new format sucks

(it appears the 2004 format change was even more hated. somehow mtbr survived )

I keep on getting error messages when I try to log into any of the forums, this wasn't as much of an issue on the older format.

What happened to the "NEW POSTS" button??? It was there yesterday, now it's gone. I really enjoyed hitting the new posts button and scrolling though all of the days posts.

Even the database hates the new format so much, it keeps trying to die.

Not to be a contrarian to our little whine festival here, but I don't mind it. If you were to ask and make me choose which I like better, I honestly couldn't tell you. Once I figured out the width issue, it was fine.

Now Picassa.... Google went and royally F'ed that up. I used to be able to find a pic, select it, and copy/paste a URL to embed it in the size and orientation I wanted, but no longer. Now, it's slow and annoying because they went and animated all these little things in it, like fanning your pics out of an album, and not loading all the pics on a page until you scroll down. It fully slowed down my pics.
