What's with the Surly Singleator tensioner?

I've got really mixed opinions on Surlys chaintensioner.

Some say it's good.. others it's bad.. So are there monday pieces at the market or can't people read the instruction or shorten the chain enough so it wouldn't jump?

I never had an issue with mine when I had it. It was setup in the push up configuration.

My cheap no name tensioner is moving sideways and makes noise at every full pedal rotation. I thought I'd make a dinlge-speed tensioner out of this one by adding a pulley wheel from the old tensioner.

Though for my student budget it's still kind of expensive. That's why I'm asking.

    More opinions?

It's been years since I had one. Mine worked fine when set to push up. I also had it briefly set up to push down (couldn't shorten the chain more and at the length it was the tensioner hit the chain stay when pushing up) and in that configuration I had trouble with it.
If I get a tensioner again (which is possible ) I'm going to try something like Paul's Melvin. Nice but pricier.
    Cheers, Dave

+1. No issues at all when I used it.

Had good results with mine pushing up; the only problem (AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN MY FAULT) was the spring released tension once by the "hook" coming out (internally) when I was far from home; fortunately wired it and had a fixed tensioner until I got home and repaired it.

Some have said when tightened "correctly" chain jumped, and when tightened with your teeth screaking it hold for a second and then snapped the spring.

I think it must be too long chain.. cause I haven't had an issue (Except what I explained earlier) with a tensioner half the price. Tough I have same number of teeth in both ratios on my D-S.
