Versatile Cranks - SS convert to 2X10

Does anyone have a suggestion for cranks to be used as SS during winter/spring and convert to a 2X10. Buying a new Pro29SL and want to be able to go SS and geared.

Order the a set of Shimano DYNA-SYS XT's, but was wondering if the '10 XTR 970's would work. Shop tells me that the XT's will be fine..pulling the 44 and 22 ring and putting on a bashguard.

    Any help would be appreciated.

sure, most any triple crank can be used with a single ring. I think that the newer XTR cranks have an unusual bolt arrangement for the big ring, but I'm pretty sure I saw an XTR-specific bash ring on the Blackspire website.

I have the XTs and it will work fine. I put a BBG bashguard on the front and just use it's middle ring. The middle is a steel/composite ring so it will last with constant use.
