Way faster on my singlespeed. I compared times over an 8 miles loop, and I was 14 minutes faster on the ss. I have yet to beat that time on my geared bike even at what I consider "full gas."

holy bat farts, 52/16? is that a type-o? I ride 38/17 on my SS road bike for commuting. i could not imagine riding anything about 42 on the front on a light-packed road ride.

Yeah, that is a huge gear for a hilly area. I ride in a hilly area (that means about 1000 feet of climbing per hour for me) and I ride 48:16. And although I am 50 years old, I race single speed and train a lot to be able to handle it. Old Zaskar must be a very strong rider IMO.

14 minutes? Interesting. Rolling terrain or steep ups/downs?

    Treason!

added a nine-speed mech to my Karate Monkey. I am doing a long ride with some friends tomorrow at an actual mountain and I didn't want to risk being a drag on the group. I can easily swap this back to SS any time I want, so I'll do some experiments with each over the next few months.
