Single speed XTC carbon...without a tensioner

I've been playing around with various gearing set ups, old chains, new chains, combination old and new chains, half links, and can't seem to find the right set up for my Giant XTC carbon without having to use a tensioner.

I hate tensioners. With a passion.

I was told that the magic gear for an alloy XTC was 32/20. Since the alloy XTC and the carbon share the same geo I figured I was golden. Not quite. I know Adam Craig raced his set up 34/18 with a half link, but I can't push that gear on the rides I do without giving myself a hernia.

There are no press fit EBB's the work for this frame and the Eno hub is problematic for bikes with post mount brake tabs.

Can anyone tell me a gearing setup that comes close to 32/20 or 33/20 ratio that works without a tensioner?

    Thanks

i tried this. It claims 32/20 will work with a half link, but it doesn't. Unless Giant is wrong about their claimed 17.3 inch chainstay.

You sure? That's not what I see on the chart (but then I suck at using that chart). I see 38/20 though. Closest I see for a magic gear in the range you're hoping for is 36/20, and that will require a chain that has stretched a bit more than most people find reasonable.

ACcording to this chart 32/20 will work with a chainstay length just under 17.25 inches with a half link. But when I try to set it up with a half link its way too loose. I guess that very small difference in chainstay length makes a bigger difference than I figured.

The XTC has some 'special' bottom bracket shell width. I'll check to see if this will fit.

    Thanks!

You have to measure the chainstay length yourself from center of skewer to center of bb. The program is more accurate if unit in cm is used.
everything sucks but my vacuum cleaner.

hey man did you ever happen to find a magic gear that worked for this frame? I recently acquired an XTC carbon 29'er frame myself, and would love to set this up with a magic gear if possible.

You can leave the single speed, but it will never leave you.

I have been trying for six years now, it never seems to work.
Thanks to www.weavercycleworks.com for my awesome bike frames!
