I ride intermediate to advanced trails that are really up and down and I'm not that strong. would I be able to ride those trails with a SS? How much would a 23-24 pound SS cost? I found a lot of stuff about SS's and it looks like it would be really hard to convert a bike to a SS, would it? Thanks a lot
Riding advanced trails on an SS depends upon rider skills. I know some SSrs who can ride the gnarliest of gnarly trails and some that can only ride groomed singletrack.
23-24 SS will cost you anywhere from a used bike at a couple hunned to a full out custom blinglespeed costing a couple grand....a good beginner choice might be a Redline Monocog. They are relatively cheap and come in right around that weight.
The cheapest SS will be the one you convert. Conversion kits can be had for 50-75 bucks or make yourself one with a cog and cog spacers. Depending upon the bike you are converting wether it be a horizontal or vertical dropout you may have to get a chain tensioner or find the "magic gear" that allows you to have just the right amount of chain tension.
My friend just got a monocog (29er) and I'm thinkin' it's more like 26-27# stock...
He loves it!
I just started this SS thing too, and re-geared way down to 32x22 in order to make most of the climbs on my easier trails.
Many gear choices...all have pro's n con's...
I just started SSing about 2 weeks ago and I was scared of the same thing. Will I be able to ride the same stuff?
The answer was a resounding yes. Not only can I ride the stuff I did before but I actually ride it better. I'm faster on the climbs which was really the part I was worried about and haven't had one single thing to complain about since I started. Good luck with whichever route you decide to take and I guarantee you'll love it.
Whatever route you take, buying a true SS (the best way) or converting a geared bike (it's not hard), you'll find it will ultimately help you become a better rider. You'll learn to keep your momentum, climb better and have a simpler bike. Just find the gear combo that works best for you and where you ride.
Enjoy!
