    P1, hardrock SS, or neither

I can get Specialized bikes at cost through my campus bike club so i wanted some opinions on these bikes. I only have a few hundred bucks to spend and i would like a bike that i can ride around local trails. the Hardrock would cost ~350 and the P1 ~450 (front brake needed). i like riding fast and i pretty much destroyed my old bike (entry level rigid bike).

so are either of these bikes a reasonable choice for pretty tough riding. i'm not sure if the P1 is a viable climber, plus could have the fork on the hardrock upgraded with the extra hundred bucks. oh yea i like the singlespeeds because they dont have crappy drivetrain parts i'd end up replacing really quickly and more money goes into the fork and other parts. also i enjoy mashing up hills, its much quicker that way

Good job! get the base model rockhopper

and convert it to SS. you can sell the shifty parts for beer money , and you'll end up with a more trail-worthy setup.
