Noob to SS question about chains.

Hi all and thanks for helping me.

Please excuse my ignorance as I am new to SS.

I am ready to build my new SS 29er but I need clarification on a few things:

1 - I am going to run a 3/32 cog in the rear and was going to use my XT cranks with a rampless chain ring. Should I get a 8 spd chain or a 1/8 chain? I need clarification before I buy the chain or get a SS specific crankset. Looking for a light but strong chain of course, more towards strong.

    2 - Will a SS/rampless chainring work with a 3/32 8speed chain?

3 - Should I buy a SS crankset or just use my XT crankset with a 32t ramped chainring or lose the ramped OR get what chainring?

Thanks all. Had a few beers tonight, Ok more than that. Help me out please.

    3/32 chain

Your XT crankset is a very common and very good singlespeed crankset. You can use the chainring already on it, or get a singlespeed specific one. The 3/32 8sp chain should work fine on 99% of the rings that will fit on your cranks.

    1 - 8 spd or 3/32 chain

2 - Most SS rings (like Surly, Salsa, Blackspire) work with 3/32" 8 spd chains

3 - XT is a great stiff crankset. Sell the ramped rings and get a Salsa SS ring.

    1. 8 spd chain 4 life

    2. It will work

    3. The XT middle ring is not ramped the sides are were the composite is but not the actual ring. I like this ring because it is steel and will last a long time with constant use.

This one really got me upset because we already had a chain question thread going on- one that irritated me on another level, as it assumed that chain choice might be 29er specific.

and you know what sucks? These threads still get tons of answers, yet the ONE thread i start when i have a legitimate question gets barely any response. I mean really, do i ask too many questions? Including the 2 in this post, i think i'm up to 3 for the past 4 years.

Now that would be a good thread. But I know what you are saying- it makes as much sense as my roommates making the decision to watch Dune tonight. At least you're positive/funny contributor?
