    New to Single Speed

I am going to take some time and build a single speed. I was thinking Santa Cruz Chameleon and go from there. Do you guys have tips on components e.g. fork and such? I don't want to blow the bank on a frame so if the SC is not good enough I want to stay within 600 give or take. The rest will be bought when I have the time/cash. I currently ride a 2004 Specialized SJ FSR. I don't think I need top of the line but don't want to be cheap either. I also would like to build it myself and have it tuned. I have a bike already and would like the experience of building one.

1st place to look is http://www.mtbr.com/faq/ssfaq.shtml

most of your normal stuff will work- seatpost, seat, pedals, handlebar...and on. the differences come with chains, chainrings and cogs. beefy is better! as for a fork, something with lockout is good, or just go rigid! looking for parts? webcyclery has a dedicated SS section, to give you an idea. if you want to go cheaper, the classifieds here on mtbr have great stuff.

Yeah, build it up yourself, thats the BEST

Rigid forks are great, tho I don't know how it is down there in Phoenix. We're gonna be down there in Tucson next week getting some rides in on our rigid SS bikes before the 24 hours of ol Pueblo.. I'll be passing thur Phoenix sometime saturday so if you see an older red 4runner loaded with SS bikes, that'd be me!

ONce ya start building up your own bikes you'll start to build up your own wheels and thats LOTS of fun.

The more I know the more I know I don't know.
Let the bike ride the trail, you ride the bike.
Look where you want to go, not where you don't want to go.
